@XperiaJunkie, up to 800 ISO currently yes, I was wondering if Sony would add 1600, and 3200 ISO, I should have been more clear, sorry.

@ascariss - you can adjust ISO up to 1600 and 3200 in 8mp manual mode. only up to 800 in 20mp manual mode (wonder why)..
@gitaroo - i don't know how you're concluding a dedicated image processing chip = GPU or anything related to the S800. like i said, if the PR info is true, then it should be distinct from the S800. Of course, we'll never really know the truth unless someone knows a sony engineer who designed the circuit board.

I have had a scout around all things releated to the "BIONZ image processing engine" on documents, adverts, promos they dont the mention the word "chip" is is always referred to as a processing engine which in my guess would make it software based like the MBE was. Sony haven't included the chip I think for a few reasons.
1. Do they really want a phone as good as their PAS compact cameras
2. Cost, including the chip my have increased the cost of the phone at £599.99 here in the UK it is quiet expensive already
3. Space maybe they didn't include the chip as the simply didn't have enough room which of resulted in the phone being even bigger (I know the chip is tiny but it has to go somewhere)
These are all my personal theories as to why I think it is software based and as to why there is no actual chip.
Anyone agree.

xperiajunkie - just search for bionz processing chip and you'll see many circuit boards with a branded chip. it's a standalone chip, not software (at least in standalone cameras)
i think you're confusing the BIONZ processing chip vs. the BIONZ processing engine. The engine is executed by the standalone chip.

I know it is a dedicated chip I have no problem with that I just think Sony have developed New software that can basically do the same job as the BIONZ chip without actually using the chip in the device just the brand name. To be honest I hope I'm wrong about this and would love a dedicated BIONZ chip in my Xperia Z1 asK have seen the fantastic things it can produce.

the chip executes the engine, so it's just a matter of putting the engine on a capable processor. the S800 is surely powerful enough to handle this, but the PR info says that the BIONZ doesn't rely on the smartphone's processor, which leads to the conclusion that it uses a distinct imaging processing chip. Is it the bionz CHIP? maybe not. possibly just a capable chip for mobile purposes (which makes it Bionz for mobile), but it's not the S800. (assuming all the PR info is true).

@Moogoo I hope your right I really do but I suppose we won't find out until there is a proper teardown or someone from Sony speak up and answers our questions.
