It wouldn't be wise for them to buy the whole ST-Ericsson. The only valuable part is the modem-side, and it might be a bidding war between them and Samsung for that.

honestly ramu regards to these roping and fake clouds of superiority that both Apple & Samsung did for them selves , but you must aware that at least these new target is so easy to them , simple calculations as follow
-Returning old customers from 40%-45% from the old users
*2012&2011 (effect on 2013= 150 to 160 mil)
Samsung sold around 320 mil in 2012 and 200 something in 2011
*2010&2009(effect on 2013= 75 to 85 mil)
Samsung sold around 180 mil in 2010 and from 120 mil to 150 mil in 2009 i don't remember well
-New customers
*Changing brand
*Experimented new brand with his old brand
*New to the PDAs / smart phones
*Commercial advertising / Family or Friends recommendations
*Corps & Companies (official/non official)
honestly i am may be the most SONY guy but by simple calculations unless they give the people something bad or total underestimation they 'll reach what they want
the problem in SONY they are just starting to say hello to people , SONY to be number 1 need to sell more by making new tech not by stand still and wishing Samsung or Apple sales decrese
the Xperia-Z is amazing thing that far away better than Samsung Galaxy SIII , and from the features i have about Xperia-One aka (2h.2013) i believe the bar is much more higher than Samsung Galaxy SIV even SV
yes SONY 'll take the major of it's increase from Samsung & Apple , but there are a new generations and new people to smart phone arena SONY should continue there R&D and there stand alone design , stand alone OS and i guess it's new OS 'll be just exclusive for it as Apple and iOS , and around 95% 'll be the newly UNIX based Ubuntu with some much much more advertising please then on 2016 or 2017 we may see them #1

@maiaramdan what you saying is true but let Xperia Z come into the market. I strongly believe Sony is now ready to be No.1 and Sony before and even now had always been ahead with technology innovations. The only problem was the chipset. When there was dual core, they were releasing single core. When there was quad core, they released dual core.
But with 1080p full HD, high quality materials, Exmor mobile sensor & the most important feature which will bring Sony to No.1 is water/dust resistant. This smartphone will sell like hot cake and will give Apple & Samsung users a taste what a new age smartphone is all about. Even if S4 comes out with a very powerful hardware, Xperia Z has what nobody can match - design/quality/true innovation.
Remember, Apple users only switched to Samsung when they actually saw the other users what S3 could do.
Again, Apple & Samsung both have amazing phones in it's own way. iOS is used widely by users who want simple interface while S3 has been used widely by users who wants more features. Now where XZ fits? it will be used by both cause it's got high quality camera/rich materials & features I don't need to mention!

The numbers from IDC look great
But we still have to wait until Feb to see the actual report from Sony themselves
@tapas: that is the total Mobile phones shipments not Smartphones
You can check on IDC website, they separated Smartphone and Mobile Phone in 2 tables
