Okay, so ive read about the X1 a fair bit, and watched the webcast, and im left with a horrible feeling that the whole device is built around a theory that isnt particularly good.
Panels...is it just me, or do we not actually need these 'panels', i meen, great, we can have fish swimming around the 'desktop' sometimes, and other times we can have the media player....big woop...to change panels requires pressing 2 buttons,...think about a normal phone, we can press the menu button, then the media player button, and there you go, the media player is open.
Im sorry if you guys think this panel thing is great, but as it stands, it seems that the whole idea which this phone is built around is just a bit of a gimmick...we don't need 9 friggin desktops! its just like the bloody menu on any other SE phone.
Anyone else feel the same at all?
I think that the Panel concept will allow for convenience. Seeing how, you can customize your panels to fit your needs.
Why have to go into the menu screen, when the panel that you're looking for is right in front of you.
Also, there's eight other panels that you can go through as well.
Some people might need nine panels?
Facebook, Google, Fish, Media Player, Opera Mobile, umm.. ok fine, I think nine is a lot but you'll never know, you might need more than nine panels haha.
To me, it's just convenience that it's right in front of me.
Some of you guys are having the wool pulled over your eyes...
Let me just explain... The panels...okay. So you say it is a convenience?
Say your using ur internet browser, sayyy, on google... Imagine that you had google set up as a panel. great...you wanna go send a text...., so you close the panel down and open your new panel with your text options, and select new sms. great. nice and convienient.
But i ask you...how is that any more 'convieniant' than surfing google on your ...sayy..k850, and then going to your menu and opening up a new sms...its like 2 or 3 click. Jeez....
Yes i appreciate that the 9 panels are all active, yes they all update so they show live previews.... yes, eventually once third parties create new panels, there could be some interesting things...but seriosly, the hype that SE are giving about these panels is just wayyy too much.
Anyone who has watched the webcast for the X1 will have seen the guy from SE struggling to answer questions as to how the panels change your way of using the phone. He just kept re-itterating the point that theres 9 possible desktops. I see it as just a variation on the menu of a phone.
Sorry, its just the way i feel, i mean i love SE phones, and im not whining about any performance lackings or whatever....i just think SE are making too much of the panel idea. It just isn't as good as they think it is. It IS a gimmick to sell phones.

The Panels are the key differentiator for this phone, and the only part of the software and the interface that actually comes from SE and makes this phone different to the dozens of similar Windows Mobile handsets already out there. Therefore, they have to be amazing, and epoch-making, and revolutionary, and the best thing to ever happen to a phone ever. They have to be.

I don't see how the combination of Windows Mobile, and general usability (not something WinMo is normally known for) is a bad thing!
I don't suppose anyone knows anything about when this phone will be available on O2 in the UK? I'm due an upgrade now, and the X1 is looking like a nice option.

I wouldn't hold your breath on the Xperia being available on O2 anytime soon. Last time I spoke to them they didn't even have the phone on their system, although when I asked in an O2 store they said if it wasn't on their systems they would most likely be getting it around the end of October(?). Although this was around two weeks ago, so guess they might have more info now.
I can't believe the tariffs on Expansys for O2. 24 month contract, £96 a month just to get the handset for free. Carphone Warehouse are giving it to me for free on an 18 month contract. Fair enough I don't get unlimited calls like with the Expansys deal, only 600. But I get unlimited texts.
I can't believe they are also charging for the handset sim free - £584! That's almost £100 more than Play.com are charging. Suppose it pays to shop around!

It's not, but bear in mind it's not a concept exclusive to the Panels either. Most of the other makes of WM phones (HTC especially) also have similar enhancements to the standard interface, such as Touchflo 3D. The question is, are the Panels sufficiently better than that to justify some of the hyperbole in this thread... and the answer is, probably not.
I'm still not 100% clear on how having "multiple desktops" actually makes anything easier to use. Just one desktop, with a useful selection of finger friendly apps, would probably suit more people.

Ok I am not from UK so I don't really know if Play.com pricing includes VAT or whatver the tax is called.
But the pricing for the X1 without the VAT on expansys is £497.86

Does anyone know what the max capacity Micro SD card the X1 will support?
as the 16Gb ones are available at a good price now, but I remember the debacle with 8Gb cards and the P990 e.g. mine would never accept one! Ho Hum life is never easy as a

customer.
Where? I can't find anybody who is selling 16GB microSD and have them in stock...

The panels are just a marketing tool to make us buy the X1 and NO they will be none of the things you ask them to be

they will be exactly what they are, a simple interface nothing more nothing less! A bit cynical maybe be realistic I think.
