when all there phones use the same SoC, they can share drivers right. And I thought most dev are just 1 or 2 guys.

They hired Jerpelea from xda who runs the Free Xperia Project.

His role is, as JOH was alluding to, more to do with helping Sony cooperate better with the enthusiast developer scene than help bring new OS versions to brand new devices faster.

You're right that 4.4.4 is a nice surprise, but it doesn't really answer my question.

EDIT: As if on cue, Jerpelea posted on xda the Sony kernel sources github link. This is the sort of work he is doing for Sony.

Off-topic, but it looks like Jerpelea has renamed from FXP back to Jerpelea and has removed all his signature links to FXP. Perhaps Sony's move to hire him is one more political and they have actually intended and succeeded in stopping the leader of the biggest community dev group.

A small OT,

Sony officially splits its TV business to another company, Sony Visual Products, which will soon start its corporate operations at the beginning of July.

Nothing new in spec... only new design...

Even though there's already a new SoC from Qualcomm available after the 801 which is the 805 and it has better clocks + Newer Adreno ( 400 series compared to 300 series in 801 and below )...

But most rumours says that Sony will stick to 801 and will skip 805...

If you want both new design and new spec. then wait for Z4 in 2Q14...
It should have the new 64bit Snappy 810 and the new design... no word about any other spec AFAIK.. but I'm expecting new camera, at least updated sensor...

Japan Display Inc. Begins Preparing for Mass Production of Pixel Eyes for High Resolution Tablets

June 19, 2014 (Tokyo, Japan): Japan Display Inc. (President and CEO: Shuichi Otsuka, JDI), a leading global supplier of small- and medium-sized displays, has completed development of elemental technologies for "Pixel Eyes" LCD module for high resolution tablets and begun preparations for mass production. That will enable "Pixel Eyes" products to be introduced to high resolution tablets featuring, for example, more than 7-inch wide QXGA (1,600 x 2,560 pixels) and 4K2K (3,840 x 2,160 pixels) displays in addition to smartphones with displays in the 5-inch class*1.

"Pixel Eyes" is a product incorporating JDI's original technology that implants the touch sensor functions into display panels. It eliminates the need for the touch panel that has conventionally incorporated as a separate component. This means that the display module will be thinner in size, lighter in weight and higher in transmissivity. It will also open the way not only for a comfortable touch operation experience but also a broad range of user interfaces, including stylus entry.

Could this be integrated into the rumoured mini tablet set to launch at IFA?
