Hrmm...I saw this from a user named zomgbbqftw on NeoGAF who seems to have some insight into Sonys businesses, but I don't know if he's an actual insider or just a fan. Nevertheless, I found it interesting and am wondering if anyone knows if it's true:
This means we will get the first true Sony phone late in 2013, something that has been designed fully in house. There are also rumours hotting up that they will make a move for ST-Ericsson soon, bringing an SoC designer in house. Ericsson have wanted out for a while and STM need the cash so a bid would be accepted.

I remember some people have said they wish Sony would aquire/parter with ST-Ericsson, but I don't recall any real rumours saying Sony wants to make a move for them. So... anyone know if there's truth to this?

Hmm! Interesting spot there vivftp. But quite frankly this is the first time I've read about Sony wanting to acquire ST-Ericsson. And personally I would say it isn't gonna happen. ST-Ericsson acquisition would mean churning close to 1.5-2 billion dollars.

@rog from what you're saying can we read that there is more to come than what is currently on the table? Sony still have some hidden cards to play?
The only other Sony phone that's even been hinted at would be the Xperia Nexus, so maybe rog is talking about that? Or maybe the LT25i? I suppose we haven't seen any pics of that to date.

I agree it's a long shot, but it would defaintely beef up Sonys mobile business profile if they either aquired, or replaced Ericsson in that joint venture. As for the cash, well Sony's been on one helluva spending spree over the past year so I wouldn't put it past them. Hell, they're looking to spend 3/4 billion dollars to aquire all shares they don't currently own in the Japanese ISP So-Net. It isn't inconcievable that they'd toss a couple billion dollars to have their own SoC manufacturing process for mobiles, which is now one of their core businesses.

They shouldn't acquire them imo but strengthen their relationship. HTC have qualcomm, samsung themselves, Motorola TI and Sony could use ST-ericsson. They have great stuff in the pipeline, 9600 and 8540

That hint from rog sounds very good. Near enough everyone thinks the GX is a great looker. Now it seems it's nicer looking brother / sister is due to make an appearance.

Vita's quad core chip was designed by Sony/IBM/Toshiba and is Sony owned design... people forget how big Sony usually is... they spend 6 billion on R&D every year, Samsung and Apple only recently started doing that.

Yea definitely. St-Ericsson could bring their expertise in modems though. Nova 9600 is a monster and will easily beat the vita quadcore. Sony should have made a phone with the vita soc+a modem in early 2012 to be competitive
