nup, no snow. there will probably be a bit in the high country but the altitude in the suburbs is generally too low in this climate.

ok, mostly boring weekend. had to go to Phillip Island for the 70th birthday of a family friend, with all the wild partying and excitement that implies. we got lost twice on the way because my navigator (i.e. my wife) slept most of the trip, and after we arrived we were mostly fresh-aired by the few people within our age-group that we actually did know. that's not to say they aren't nice people, but since my dad had arrived before us he had already told everyone all our news - the house, etc. - so we didn't really have much else to talk about.
everyone spent most of the evening being entertained by the dog playing with one of those over-sized tennis balls that are sold for autographing.
the event was actually for my best man's father, but my mate spent all his time with his new
to the exclusion of almost everyone else. that whole situation is something i'm not too sure about. he's still not divorced from his wife, and legally can't be for a couple more months, but now his girlfriend of about 8 months is pregnant. still, they seem very happy about developments and i think he'd make a great father.
the thing is i remember when he first separated from his wife he kept going on about how he didn't like the way he'd let her dominate his life, but now it's almost like he wasn't paying attention. i know the baby changes things a little, but it goes back before that. at least this girl ocassionally talks to people, which is a huge improvement on the previous effort, but she's still a lot of work to engage in conversation. the whole thing seems a bit odd to me, and i'm seeing some disturbing trends reappear there just quietly
anyway, we stayed down the island for the night. sunday morning was nice with brekky on a beachside cafe and a stroll along the boardwalk to have a look at the penguins and fur seals. we drove back to melbourne, stopping off to see my wife's best friend on the way home.
now here's the interesting bit...
our neighbours over the road got into another stouche with each other. these two families, each about a dozen or so people living in a two-bedroom house, have a go at each other nearly every week. neither of them are really innocent, since they bate each other mercilessly. normally it doesn't go much beyond hurling abuse, but this time one of them picked up some fairly hefty stones and sent them flying through the front window (which turns out to be the kids' bedroom). anyway, when we saw that i decided to call the cops - not the first time they've had to come for these guys either. they turned up about ten minutes later, but by then things had settled a little. the boys in blue spent about the next hour or so trying to calm people down and get the story straight, but didn't take it much further since the "victims" weren't the sort to want the cops nosing about too much. at least while they keep each other amused they ignore the rest of us.
as you can tell, we live in a classy area. now you probably have more of an idea why we want the house finished so badly. in the meantime, we keep ourselves amused watching our neighbours through a crack in the curtain - and watching the comings and goings at the illegal brothel around the corner!
