So I've been using the 5 for almost two months now.. I still don't understand what is so special about this phone

Thats the ironic thing about the iPhone 5 the most. Its probably one of the most beautiful phones out there, slightly ruined when you unlock the screen to see the old looking interface. Its starting to remind me of Symbian.

I'm still not that keen On the podcast app which has replaced

The thing is the interface is generally new and fresh along with Android and WP.
But where it lacks is where the others excel. Homescreens and widgets. Live tiles and proper updating.
Apple went so simple and slick they made the whole thing boring to use.

BUuut, this was my first personal iPhone to own (in past I've played with friends/shop iphones) and had one of the most iphone 5 frequent bug: extremely low wifi signal so had to sent back. There are multiple topics with wifi related problems on apple discussion site..
Haven't had too much time to test iOS, but the stock (eg: non-jailbroken) software is very limited in comparison to Android Jelly Bean.
Waiting for the exchanged one..

Its something ive always used constantly every single time i turn on my phones, ever since i bought a smartphone. I know Apple have done a great job at closing and resuming apps, but its not the same as having the app continue doing what it can do in the background.

Must agree with you Etaab on multitasking, the difference between it on iOS and Android is almost night and day although there is the caching which is similar, the difference being that in Android everything you do generally gets saved while in iOS you sometimes have to start again.
As much as I am loving my iPad, I would hate to own a phone running iOS, it would drive me insane with the lack of proper multitasking.

Etaab, I think you hit a major point on the pin-head without realizing it. Multitasking is the just the tip of what makes the iOS stable for non-tech-savy users, but its also the "tip" of all its numbness its restrictions.
The part you've hit without realizing it is this first nation API functionality vs 2nd/3rd party functionality:
only Apple's apps can share data completely with the core OS or other applications. Yes there is a Calendar, Contacts, Clock API's ... but they don't follow standard convention. I want a developer to create an app that attaches Alarms/Reminders/Pictures/VoiceNotes/Video clips to a Note BUT BUT BUT - said developer cannot without a) sourcing media from storage, b) creating its OWN alarm/reminder, and c) without creating a wholly owned app that manages all of this itself: the simple reason why so many Notes apps exist in iOS and its getting crowded and silly - even EverNote seems useless to exist on its own. I see no reason to download or install that app! Even on Android it doesn't make sense - unless you're on a Nexus and running pure/barren.
Don't get me wrong there IS a place for proper GTD (Get Things Done) apps because they work as a project management app. Things! as well as a few others is perfect for this need; but they still have their own alarms/reminders - this so called seemlessness that Apple preaches in iOS is far from it.

I read an article somewhere recently where one reviewer of mobile phones said he'd always been unhappy with how poorly iOS simply cannot perform such functions since it cannot multitask and therefore apps for iOS were simpler than their Android counterparts.
This became more apparent when i spent Christmas at my sisters house. Her and her partner both have iPhone 4s (not 4S). My sister and her partner are both into going to the gym, more so now than any other time of the year. We were discussing apps which track you when you go for a run. Ive got Google's own My Tracks app, they had their iOS equivelant. The funny thing is they were both annoyed about how their app had to be kept on screen for the duration of their run, but Google's could be just left running in the background.
It just reminded me of the whole Symbian versus the next generation of OS arguement. Even my N8 can still run such an app in the background whilst you use the phone for other purposes. My sister and her partner were surprised my SGS3 could do such a thing. Which is a surprise, because my sisters boyfriend works in IT as a programmer.

^ right... there is a huge misconception about what Symbian really is. The core itself its actually more "modern" than any of the other so called "new generation" OS-s ... I still think that given enough time, EKA2 would have been the best choice of a core for a mobile/embedded OS.
Of course its not perfect.. but it was made for mobile phones, and it shows. We basically have desktop OSs trying to be mobile (Linux, Windows NT, Unix..) and the other hand we have Symbian which was a phone OS trying to do desktop like things...
