WIndows isn't exactly known for providing good Java support, but who knows. Perhaps SE has added something.

I'll be honest with you, I'd never heard of surface acoustic until now, and I'm not 100% convinced that technology has ever been used in any smartphone.
I'm been following this thread I believe Max is right from the first post. I am not expert on touch screens and I don't think Max is one either but for at least 10 years I've read or heard about multitud of different touch technologies some maybe don't exist any more.
But surely I read some where about
accoustic pulse sensitive screens I though it was for some high end technology aparatus but now that Max mentioned it I realized we have it in our hand without even knowing. Others that come to head now seems may not be a reality yet like: Resistive, I think this the one that needs preassure, Capacitive I believe this is the one iPhone uses, Infrared, optical, reflexive...
But BTW I digged out an old palm pilot about 1999/2000 and it looks plastic but it's very hard I was drawing on it and responds to nails and stylus with almost no touch. With the finger I have to press but a minimum.
@Boinng
EDIT I just read the surgery Max did on his device. That counts better that whatever I said here.
@Max_Wedge
Thanks Max, I got a better understanding. (at least on the Mini screen)

but the fact is the screens are designed to protect the lcd and to say you need a screen protector just indicates excessive force is being used.

well, if it's not one of the 32-35 countries that are getting it on september 30th, then you'll be seeing it launch when it launches in North America as well.
I know of a couple of people on here that pre-ordered it from expansys.com.
I think it's a reliable site.
I to have pre-ordered it from expansys.com.

Yeah, you'll have to stand in the looong line at Expansys. Or you could get the Touch Pro or Omnia, they're really short lines

Well, the earlier protos had a dedicated switch to change the orientation but it was inactive. It was in line of the mini usb port. It was said to get activated in the final hardware. And now in the pic, that switch is not present. Check the first page of this forum for the older pic with the orientation switch.
AFAIK, that switch never did anything. It certainly would have been redundant to have that switch, when opening the keyboard did the same exact thing.
They should have kept it and made it a 'free' soft key.

But opening the keyboard every now and then to change orientation is nonsense. They better compensate it with an accelerometer.

Yeah I agree. What if you wanted to switch the screen to landscape, without the keyboard?

@max_wedge
@Boinng
First of all thanx for the lively discussion. I seriously learned a lot.
For me as a heavy mobile user the question of the screen is really important since I am not the best at keeping it out of pockets with keys, money etc. My Ipod touch is virtually impossible to scratch (The front. The back already looks awful

) My P1 on the other hand (treated more or less the same) Is covered in big and small scratches... I don't really care to much about the odd scratch as long as the functionality stays the same. However of course it would have been a plus if the screen of X1 would have been virtually unscratchable like Ipods.
On the other hand the Ipod Screen does not allow the use of any stylus... it only accepts finger input (read somewhere that the ipod screen reacts to heat, so "dead" objects can not operate it). This when using internet over the wifi of the ipod is seriously annoying if you have a little bit chubby fingers
The HTC touch has a relatively hard screen (compared to P1) and allows use of stylus and handwriting recognition. So if the X1 had a similar quality (maybe will be a little more scratch resistant because its set into the phone) I would be happy.
I guess the only real way to find out is to have the device on hand
Again thanx for all the info!
