@tranced,i too once took the picture of the sun in bit cloudy conditions and got this strange blackspot(naa...not u blackspot ) in the centre.was a mystery for me so i posted it here.but then marlonski advised me against further pictures of sun to study the blackspot as it may damage my camera.i still dont know why the blackspot came there...

Dr_thug, the blackspot is caused by the cmos being overpowered by light. The excess light is too strong for the pixels to register, hence a black spot at the area of brightest light. Only the sun and a few other sources are bright enough to cause such an overload.

It won't destroy the cmos outright to take pictures of the sun, but it will contribute to early failure of the cmos, especially if you point the camera at the sun for an extended period of time (whether taking a photo or not). Only occasionally take a photo of the sun (if at all).

In this pic I shielded the sun with a tree trunk. It worked out a reasonable way to take a photo that features the sun, without getting a black spot.
