private trackers are the most reliable, but the rules are more rigid. I haven't downloaded a virus from a public tracker yet, so I think it also depends on the person who downloads

once i'd tried downloading a song
and i did got several results
but the peculiar thing was that abt 50 or so results were exactly of the same size
while some weren't
so i downloaded the ones with same size
and voila
it was a virus
(and i thought the different sized files were virus!!))
later i checked the shared folder on my pc
and it also had 1000+ files of the same size with names of various softwares!!
so in this way the software was spreading virus!

well, a song will have different sizes because it will be encoded using different encoders in different bitrates. When I want to look for a file in a public site, I'll first see if there are any comments about the file left by previous downloaders and then after verifying its authencity would I download. Also some torrent clients have the ability to play a partially downloaded file.
