although I have heard random postings of May/June availability, by far the most common is sometime in Q3, i.e. sometime before the P990

well, I don't recall such a comparison off the top of my head but realistically, they both offer much the same functionality so its down to the operating system, screen size, memory card format and other aspects like that, that separates the two.
At the earliest opportunity I will be getting both so I hope to make a detailed comparison at that time

Over on XDA-developers a few people have been told by T-Mobile that the Vario II (HTC Hermes) will be released in August.

thanks masseur and WelshTom,
I think, masseur, that you buy the unbranded version direct from the manufacturers, don't you? Is this likely to be released before a network branded phone?
I take the point about OS and functionality. It's the additional language support that I need...

yeah, I only buy i-mate because they have generally good support and are quick to release firmware updates. I've not heard good things about qtek support and I wouldnt buy a network branded one.
i-mate will call this the JasJam apparantly, but its not been officially announced yet and doesn't appear on their site yet either, whereas O2 for example have alerady announced it.
mind you, from past experience, i-mate tend to announce late and the device is available soon after

In previous models there was a SDIO port so you could plugin for example an FM SDIO card.
Is there anything like this in the HERMES or can anything be done with the microSD slot?

min SD is the one down point for me when I moved from the Jam to the k-JAM.
I already had a 2gb SD card and was close to buying a 4gb card when I learned about the mini SD in the k-jam and so had to settle for 1gb in my new device.
Fortunately now 2gb have been released so I am back where I was a year ago but you're right, there are very very few SDIO compliant mini SD devices available
