I agree.

If a phone can play mp3s what is it really doing that a dedicated player can't.

Well, for one thing can it hold 60 gigs worth of music? I have my entire music collection on my iPod. Sure it can play music and make calls but the fact remains: one down, two in the shop. If your music playing phone breaks, you have lost two devices where as I still have my phone that can play music. At the end of the day, media phones will not kill iPods or the other devices. They will be seen as an augmentation device.

I have backup phones, and a couple of useable (but low memory) mp3 players, and a pocketpc xdaII with SD card expansion. I'm set for breakdowns (touch wood). The only disadvantage I face using my phones is the physical capacity.

I absolutely understand why some people prefer a hard drive based player. If I had the spare cash, I'd buy an ipod (actually I prefer iriver tbh), but I still wouldn't use it as my daily player. For me the vast majority of my use fits perfectly within the abilities of the K750, so it makes sense to use it as my primary player.

There is no "correct" answer to the question of ipod versus mobile phone player. The answer is different depending on a person's requirements. Professionals in the music industry need a dedicated device not attached to their phone for example. So it all depends.

However, it is significant that phones now represent a similar threat to ipod market share as the 1-2GB mp3 players do. They are another viable alternative to an ipod for many users.

So in terms of the thread topic, I believe there will be a large number of people in the market for mp3 players who will "shun" the ipod for an mp3 player phone. How big this number is remains to be seen, but one thing I'm sure of, now that phone mp3 players are more than just a gimmick, all mp3 player makers, not just apple, will face new competition.

Great post Max.

If you are interested, I have an iPod I might be willing to part with for a reasonable price.

The key points you addressed perfectly. I use all of my devices for different purposes. iPods for music and data storage, the k800i for music and availability while out and away. I consider both an integral part of my daily experience, and would be lost without both of them.

There absolutely is a place for 20 GB+ MP3 players.

My point is that each technology has it's limitations - iPods are dependent on computers yet have a multitude of connectivity options, Mobile Phones can download music on the move but are limited in connectivity.

Whoever overcomes their limitations first and most effectively will take the upper hand.

I find the Phone Vs iPod battle fascinating. Each wants to beat the other at their own game and the consumer will be the winner.

I agree with the above. With more MP3 player integration the network providers are dying to set up music download services, and with UMTS (3G) or EDGE they have the facility for fast downloads of the tracks straight to your phone.
Weather this takes of as much as using your PC and the net to get your music fix remains to be seen.
All I know is I would change my phone every 12 to 18 months on contract but if I had an ipod I wouldn't ever change it probably.

And changing phones regularly is fine because the music is stored on the MEMORY CARD. The problem starts when , just beginning to get some decent size storage available in the Memory Stick Pro Duo, go and announce the Memory Stick Micro (M2) as it's replacement sending us back to 1 GB. Way to shoot yourself in the foot SE

Sorry for the rant, had to get that of my chest.

Some people say they prefer an ipod, others a phone that plays MP3s. If things were to continue like they are know, the memory capacity in phones would increase to the point of jeopardizing ipod´s market.
However apple is going to release a smartphone this year that will surely have big memory ( its and ipod) and that will include a download track service. If apple is smart it will be a Wi-fi smartphone so the data transfer will be free or very cheap. If apple makes this phone really competitive like with great camera, attractive design and great software ( apple´s best virtue) it will definately be a killer. Better than ´s walkman or and nokia´s N series.
We´ll just have to sit and wait. There will be a special worldwide presentation by Apple on sept 12th next week called ´It´s showtime´ . It will undoubtelly display a new iTunes service for full hollywood movies and a new ipod nano. Perhaps the iphone too? I dont know.
Even with the iphone, the ipod will continue to be developed, it will surely gain in the future a bigger screen, wi fi for internet and downloading and apples patented multi touchscreen technology yet to be seen.
Another technology was also patented by apple this year, one that allows screens to not only display but also capture light, meaning, to work like a ´camera´ or to capture movements. This will be in future Apple displays but could also be in a handheld device. Imagine the possibilites for interface, games and apps. Not to mention a screen that already works like a camera ( a new way of video conference on the go or a totally new digital camera).
This year and 2007 and have lots of new stuff! Better and nokia start coming up with new techs.

Wouldnt own an ipod. Prefer using w810i and w900i for music and phone capability. And if I did get a mp3 player it would be the Creative Technologies Zen Vision as its better than the ipod all around in sound quality, battery life even style. The ipod is overhyped rubbish not worth the price they sell for.

I guess the 80% of iPod users must not have gotten your memo.
