hi all, this is my first post.

well, i realise this is another rant and rave but after reading this topic and yet another trip to my local SC, I don't think SE's gonna make it, and i think this is why.
now the (increasingly jaded) owner of a Mystical Green T300, i just called SE Singapore last Friday to ask about the changeable covers on this phone. I was quoted 45 Singapore dollars which works out to about 25 euros or US$26.
well, before i could stop myself, i actually shouted "what! forty-five dollars for a piece of lousy plastic" at the gal on the other end! (i apologised). now, i dunno about anywhere else, but nokia's covers sell for about US$10 or so here in singapore, and they *are* made of much better material. so my question is - what's SE doing charging more than twice that for a piece of plastic that's an accomplice to the plainest-looking phone on earth?!
i just went back last Sat to replace my joystick. i'm not too pissed about that 'cos it was my fault. but i've had too many bad experiences with the after-sales service. i remember waiting 3 months after my T68m was badly scratched in an accident to have the front cover replaced - and when they got round to it, it cost me SGD60. i remember the T68m-to-i software conversion thing, trying to get them to bring it in, we waited ages. i remember the T28 mass failures (in this country, Ericsson actually was forced to do 1-to-1 exchanges for conked out T28s, after some irate guys wrote in to the papers). and now they say we have to wait till Feb 03 for our P800s??
i'm disappointed because I've been an Ericsson supporter since I got my first mobile (a T10. don't laugh) about five years back. i went on to a T28, an R320, an R310, a T29, a T39, T68m and i. the thing is, ericsson (and now SE) up till now have designed some rather boring looking phones. what has kept them from going under all this time, and what has always kept me using Ericsson, has been their technology leadership. remember? T28 - first with a polymer battery and a standby/talk time meter, not to mention an EL backlit LCD. T39 - first with Bluetooth. T68 - first *widely available* GSM colour phone (ok, so that's debatable).
but now what? the SE tech edge is gone. samsung's got better colour, nokia and motorola have caught up, yet SE phones have not improved in either style or substance. and now, the customer service sucks too. what's left? no surprise that down here in .sg the T300, which is described as SE's "rough diamond" in the white paper, is being outsold by a (more expensive) piece of crystal called the nokia 7210 by at least a factor of 10 to one. erm, well, ten of my friends just got 7210s, and none bought the T300. still, i think my statement isn't too far off the mark. no matter that the 7210's lousy MMS and inability to send stuff sucks. people are still buying it. and the million-dollar question is, why?? SE, you'd better find out fast!
it's too late for SE to catch up anymore, if you ask me. unless they release something faster, more colourful and better designed by Q1, i say they're dead. sad, huh? a company that did some really pioneering work in both fixed-line and mobile telephony. sorry, SE, that's the way this game is played. the consumer is king. deal with it.
frankly i wouldn't be surprised if SE's gone by the time my service in the army ends (October '03). right now i'm stickin with my T300, but i dunno. maybe if P800 shows up by Chinese New Year i'll get me one.

but that's a big maybe.

what do you guys think?

P.S. Don't count on me getting the 7210. I refuse to bow to nokia.

All I can see happening is that Nokia will flood the market with their same phone different cover models and the puplic will vote with their money and buy elswhere as Nokia are getting a name for selling faulty goods in the form of software probs. I hear the 7650 has a bad case of frezing every now and then. So no change there then what a supprise a Nokia with software that freezes that must be a first, OHH no that is what customer services is supposed to say as they always do when you call to sort out a problem. Of all my phones and I list a couple of Nokia's in these I only seem to have probs with the nokia's.

I have been a Nokia user all my mobie phone life. I finally found a way to proundly own an 8310. Mmmmmm t'was lovely. Unfortunately after 3 weeks it kept coming uo with 'allow SIM card action' and then shut itself down. It was sent for repair and 2 wks later I got it back. 10 days later the same fault happened again. It was sent off 4 times in 4 mths. Nokia would only agree to repair it for the 5th time (like the previous 4 times had worked) or offer me a refurbished phone. The 'customer care' Rottweiler that dealt with the issue persuaded me never, but never to hand over good money to Nokia, hence my t68i.

Stop the humming

So I would say that whilst there is definately an element of phone snobbery around,I believe with a broadening of choice available to us, there are other reasons to prefer certain phones. This would include the bonus of sites like ESATO, attitudes of manufacturers to breakdowns, upgrades etc.

blondie, what you've said is quite interesting and begs a question. y'see, here in .sg people still buy nokia despite all these problems with their phones!
i'm not kidding, almost 3/4 of all my nokia-owning friends have some sort of problem with their phones. i got a whole handful friends with 8310s who have told me about display and self-powering-off problems. of these, at least 1/2 have made more than two trips to a nokia care centre to fix the same problem! (by the way, the care centres here take three days to repair a nokia, so i guess SE .sg deserves some credit cause they can usually fix a phone in 2 hours, tops).
strange thing is, when i confront them and ask them why they put up with this crap, their attitude is summed up in "ok, so nokias are unreliable and the technology isn't top notch, but style makes up for everything else." and i believe many singaporeans think so too!! i mean, down here nokia sold more 8310s in 4 months than SE sold T68m *AND* i in 1 year!
sigh. i was just wondering, do you guys find this is the case over in your part of the world?

Yeah right, same here in id, people buying nokia coz its style, fashion and not for the good reliable function and tech. In fact many of my friends know nothing bout adv. func. in their own phone ! What a shame, bad luck for good company like SE, people just not on your side :-( This post was posted from a T68i
