@icaka,
interesting post - and as I posted earlier, I have owned some nice hifi-components in my life, so I can appreciate where you're coming from... I have a feeling though that this thread is of interest to a fairly broad section of esato-members, many of them are probably more interested in the "out-of-the-box" experience...how does a w.... compare to a n..., etc. I certainly understand that interest, as much as I appreciate reading your input. It's bad enough that we have been conditioned to "accept" that the first few month are now a "regular" series of firmware updates until maybe they get it right (p990 anyone?)... But for the average user a w-phone oughta be good for music straight out of the box (heck, these days you can buy preloaded ipods!!! For the lazy...too lazy for taste even) - as should an n91... I'm certain some readers tuned out because they don't wanna study entertainment-electronics before they can enjoy some easy, skipfree listening. That's what this thread is about. I'm sure if you got your hands on my wife's w810i it'd sound way better than my n91. But: as sold, my e61 "business" phone kicks the 810's butt (even using the monoheadset... Kidding, a bit

)not to mention "the ugly brick" a.k.a. n91!
so, I'd like some "ordinary" users to add some comments - lets face it, recently quite a bit of nagging about SE here on esato... So? Consider e.g. the interest in the e61i thread despite the fact that there already was a busy e-series thread...

no offence taken, and pretty much agree. except i would think that the true audiophile would never use mp3s as a medium, and the people who do use digital compression more or less are more concerned about file size than sound precision. after all, the point of mp3s and digital compression in general is to strike a balance between small file size and ACCEPTABLE music quality. acceptable here being relative term.
so honestly speaking, i never require more than VBR mp3s when i'm on the move, and even if i use very high end headphones like B&O, i wouldn't find much of a difference in the sound anyway. might just be my ears, i guess.

Wellspoken, bodum (and sorry for butting in on your chat with icaka).. I mean where I work,e.g., we just got 512mb phillips mps players in that "apparently" store 250 songs... Dream on - but that's the kind of space/song ratio your average consumer has been conditioned to expect...

magg, you are right about my posts, maybe they are interesting but not very useful to everyone.
So for the out-of-the-box experience - I was quite impressed by the build quality of both phones, very classy outlook.I liked the box items which they came with, really nice sets. The N91 came with a desktop stand or whatever it is called which looks nice and is useful, but not a requirement for me.Instead, the W950i had a carrying pouch, its good enough to protect it from scratches. But the W950i definitely needs a screen protector,so if you want to buy it,keep this in mind in order to save the display longer. When I was going out with the "ugly brick" it definitely attracted attention, really beautiful and shiny metal finish(until I scratched it

),just the phone had to be in scale 1:0,7 ,for example. It is heavy and I used to feel as I was carrying a really "hardcore" music device.Very nice feeling,I can't forget that,as well as the brilliant music performance, and the nice controls over the number buttons. Its look is a kind of a "luxurious" one(completely opposite to the image of the W950i - its very high-tech looking,I like it in another way). But after some time,I became accustomed to that and started thinking more rationally. It is very "tall" phone and not very slim also. The display wasn't its best feature, but not that bad if you had a 220x176 pixel display on your previous phone. The W950i has awesome large 320x240 pixel display which I find very useful for watching music videos. They can be watched in landscape view. And the SE is really thin(15mm if I recall true) and not that tall, but very wide as most touchscreen phones. It has a good-looking keypad, but not that easy to use.Keys are hard to press and I don't always hit them well because the surface is flat, although it has some kind of "dots" to show where are they.
The music transfer from my PC to the N91 was way too slow compared to the W950i.The Walkman also has better software for music transfer, though I used the both directly as mass storage devices.Instead,W950i is kind of difficult to use at the beginning - it has too "uncommon" and not very user friendly navigation when you use it with one hand,as I do most of the time. After some time I became acquainted with it,and even become "Dexter" to some extent

It hasn't the same music reproduction as the N91,a little bit "blurry" in the high and the low registers, but its "awesome enough" for the non-audiophiles.(no offense

,it certainly is the best Walkman together with the W900i)And with the HPMs in the set it sounds better than any other phone except the "ugly brick".Some HPM-82 are bundled, which are like the HPM-70,but with PLAY-PAUSE-F.FORWARD/BACK-CHANGE TRACK FORW/BACK controls on the cable and are black, but the keys are somewhat hard to press IMO.The remote control is located on the lower part before the 3.5mm jack, which is useful because you can plug in your own headphones and still have it,and you have the handsfree mic also. But the Nokia comes with slightly better sounding headphones IMHO.
About the other things - both are smartphones, the N91 has WiFi 802.11g,recording from the radio,USB,EDGE,3G,etc.The W950i has 3G(but no front camera),Opera Browser,RSS,flight mode(which enables you to use your phone only as media player without the BT and the GSM/UMTS finctions in planes),etc.
About the media players - the Nokia's one is very "slim" - not so bells and whistles as the Walkman 2.0.Read some review for more info, its a very long theme.I didn't feel much difference when adjusting the N91's EQ,the SE was on the opposite. Also the SE has more bars in the EQ(9).
The W950i hasn't camera,the N91 has a 2mpix CMOS one,not very good,but still there.
Both have 4gb of memory, the N91 uses harddisc, which is slower, fragile to an extent and uses more power than the used in the W950i flash memory.
If I recall anything more,I will add it to the post.
And about your wife's W810 - even God can't make anything about it

in the end i do believe it is up to the end user's own preference. best thing to do would be to try the music playback capabilities, before purchasing the set (if the shop allows you to). one man's radiohead might be another's crazy frog and vice versa.
and enough on the "ugly brick" already, hehe. i own another brick, though not as ugly in my eyes

. and my ipod isn't that bad sounding, is it? never tried an archos before, but still, ignorance is sometimes bliss

agreed, and good night, guys - although: crazy frog??? I'll have nightmares now that you mentioned it (in a sentence with "radiohead", quite the feat!

Yes,I was delighted by both of the phones, just in different ways.So maybe after all,I made some "out-from-the-box" experience sharing,I hope someone will find it helpful.

If you've invested in an Ipod G5 Video I'll suggest you don't try an Archos at least for one more year - as you said, ignorance is sometimes bliss
You don't know how right you are,a long time ago I started reading some audiophile threads,DIY electronics and etc.(though I am involved in electronics from years earlier)The result was thousands of pounds spent on players, headphones, cables, discs, amplifiers and God knows what...Maybe someday I'll feel these were badly spent money, but oh,God,Sarah McLachlan's voice is so much better and softer...
Sorry for going off topic guys.
