Whenever I leave my phone overnight with the alarm set it is frozen up with
a black screen when I wake up (its not off, I have to restart it by holding the
power button for 20s and then turn it on again).

@AD....

Yup done that. I really think the phone had a defective RAM or something similar. Or it might have some problems regarding SIMS although I tried testing with different SIMS just to be sure and sure enough the problem still persists. Cause when I use the PDA functions only say WIFI browsing while listening to MP3s there are no problems. But after such activity when I text or call it hangs... when I go to sleep at night and check my phone in the morning it appears oks but in reality it is already hanged. The UI is displayed like it didnt hang. You'll just be curious on why you didnt get any calls or messages when the signal bar is full and the battery is full. when I restart I am shocked to see the the battery is really almost out and the signal is very low and suddenly get smses that were sent a few hours before...

I'm curious as to why the battery drains when it hangs (the same thing happens to mine btw). It's like there is an ongoing process, or that the transmitter is active continuously whilst it's hung. Has anyone had it hang when in flight mode?

I noticed that GabrielG said that the problem improved when the set the network preferences to 'gsm only'. I also saw an improvement when I set the internet account settings to 'CS only', this means that the phone will only activate GPRS/3G when it needs it, and doesn't continously search for the signal. This also helps with battery life btw.

Another thought, perhaps manually locking it to your network instead of leaving it on auto may help...gonna try it, get back to you.

Hmm...interesting, it seems I can't access the "prefered list" of networks, but setting it to manual & restarting to get it to seek got it to find my network straight away. Also no problem going in and out of flight mode.

Anyone else find this? (control panel-connections-mobile networks). Is it an undocumented bug?

No joy with network settings, I'm afraid - but I guess every failiure is part of the process of elimination....

I wasn't really sure if turning off 3G helped. I thought it did, but on
second thought its really so random that one cant tell. Yesterday I
bought a new memory card and when I changed it I also formatted
my internal and external memory, as well as installed the firmware
again. After I rebooted I installed all my apps on the memory card
to have lots of free internal memory, and the phone actually ran for
about 4-5 h without a single problem (the longest ever). After that
It all went back to normal though.

@ Ahmed-Sama, Comicgeek:

It looks like we all have exactly the same problem. I'm
starting to think maybe it really is that faulty power output
thing. Maybe I should take it to some shop and have it
checked out? If I can't fix this problem somehow I don't
know what I'll do, I guess I'll have to find a different phone

I really think this is a hardware problem. we should not be confined to certain features of the phone since we bought the phone to use all if not just the features we wanted. What if the phone hangs when the flip is on? does this mean i shoul djust stop using the flip? it's things like these that really pisses me off .. in particular SE. They were supposed to sell quality products than most leading brand ie Nokia. But so far SE's quality control is slipping way below the acceptable line.

Changing the CDA does not affect how the phone operates. The problems I am experiencing were not related to any softare... It may only be because of a defective hardware... my guess it is the RAM. SonyEricsson should replace my unit with a new one if they can't fix it.

I absolutely agree, the unit should be able to achieve it's advertised specification. However, if it were possible to isolate the cause of the problems - it would provide us with a much stronger case when trying to prove it is a fault covered by warranties etc. Also, there are some of us for whom such guaranties maybe in doubt, and so to provide a decent workaround would be to the benefit of everybody who has to live with the phone on a day to day basis. All we were ever trying to achieve was an alleviation of the endless frustration and irritation that these difficulties cause, and also to maybe assist SE with their future development of the smartphone, because you can bet your bottom dollar that they do keep an eye on forums such as ours - if only from a marketing perspective.
