When Sybell Corbet developed this photograph of the magnificent Combermere Abbey Libray in 1891, she was rather surprised to see the lord of the house sitting in his favourite chair. Nothing too unusual about that, you might think, except that at the time the photograph was being taken, Lord Combermere was four miles away attending a funeral: His own!

There were only two servants and the photographer herself in the house at the time, and neither servant looked anything like Lord Combermere. Also, they knew that Sybell was photographing the house and so were careful not to walk into any shots.

Did Lord Combermere decide to have one last sit in his favorite chair or was there a rational explanation for this anomaly?

Interestingly, it wasn't the first time that Lord Combermere was involved in spooky goings on. He was the governor of Barbados at the time of the mysterious 'Chase Vault' happenings.

James Courtney and Michael Meehan, crew members of the S.S. Watertown, were cleaning a cargo tank of the oil tanker as it sailed toward the Panama Canal from New York City in December of 1924. Through a freak accident, the two men were overcome by gas fumes and killed. As was the custom of the time, the sailors were buried at sea off the Mexican coast on December 4.

But this was not the last the remaining crew members were to see of their unfortunate shipmates. The next day, before dusk, the first mate reported seeing the faces of the two men in the waves off the port side of the ship. They remained in the water for 10 seconds, then faded. For several days thereafter, the phantom-like faces of the sailors were clearly seen by other members of the crew in the water following the ship. On arrival in New Orleans, the ship's captain, Keith Tracy, reported the strange events to his employers, the Cities Service Company, who suggested he try to photograph the eerie faces. Captain Tracy purchased a camera for the continuing voyage. When the faces again appeared in the water, Captain Tracy took six photos, then locked the camera and film in the ship's safe. When the film was processed by a commercial developer in New York, five of the exposures showed nothing but sea foam. But the sixth showed the ghostly faces of the doomed seamen. The negative was checked for fakery by the Burns Detective Agency. After the ship's crew had been changed, there were no more reports of sightings.

This is yet another classic and very unusual ghost sighting because, unlike most other sightings, it was witnessed over a long period of time by a lot of different people. Some people claim that there is a third face in the photograph, can you see it?

In 1964, Gordon Caroll visited the parish church of St. Mary in Woodford, Northampton, England and decided to take his camera along with him. He swears that he was alone in the church and that he saw nothing unusual at the time this photograph was taken.

The developed photograph shows what appears to be a semi-transparant human figure praying at the altar. The camera, negative and photograph itself were all sent for examination by experts who concluded that the photograph was not the result of trickery in any way and that the figure appears to be dressed in a very early monk's habit or possibly even a knight's tunic .

The church is certainly very old. The present building dates back to the 12th Century and was built on the site of an old Saxon church. Many of the Parishioners, clergy and staff at the church over the years have claimed that it is haunted.

However several years after the photograph was taken, a team of investigators concluded that the photograph had an innocent explanation. The kneeling figure was actually a cleaning lady who had wandered into the shot and started cleaning the alter without the photographer noticing. Mr. Caroll did admit that he used a long exposure to take the photo, but that he was present the whole time and would definitely have seen somebody walking into shot.

Other experts argue that if this were the case, there would be evidence of the cleaning lady actually moving into shot, such as multiple impressions and blurring. None of these are apparent in the photograph and so the ghost of St. Mary's still remains an unsolved mystery to this day.

@jojo

Yes, I'm very interested in the paranormal! Thanks for the link

It Looks a bit edited rather than a genuine ghost vid but of course I may be wrong. Either way, that little girl looks seriously strange and frightening to me somehow, reminds me of the doll in the haunted ebay picture *shudder*

EDIT:

Just watched it again a few times, sussed it out!

The figure in the right-hand mirror is a paper mache model or something similar of the little girl, which is why it looks weird like the haunted ebay picture doll!

This is the granddaddy (or should that be grandma?) of all ghost photos; "the brown lady of Raynham Hall"!

in 1936, two professional photographers, Captain Provand and his assistant Indre Shira, were taking photographs of Raynham Hall in Norfolk, England for 'Country Life' magazine. The date was the 19th September, and at 4.00pm that afternoon they were photographing the Hall's main staircase. They had completed one exposure, and were preparing for another, when Shira saw a misty form ascending the stairs. He shouted to the captain that there was something on the stairs, and asked if the Captain was ready, he replied "yes" and took the cap off the lens, while Shira pressed the trigger for the flash light.

After this the captain came up from under the protective cloth, and asked what all the fuss was about. Shira explained that he had seen a shadowy, see-through figure on the stairs. When the negative was developed it showed this famous image. There were three witnesses to the negatives development, as Shira had wanted an independent observer to verify the event. He ran and got a chemist called Benjamin Jones, who managed the premises above which the development studio was located. A full account of the experience was published in Country Life magazine on the 26th of December 1936.

The photo was later examined by experts at the Country Life offices, where it was declared unlikely to have been tampered with. There have been a few detractors in more recent times saying that Shira hoaxed the image by smearing grease on the lens or moving in front of the camera, but there is unlikely to be a definitive explanation for the photo. It is still held in the offices of Country Life.
