Well, let's also include the cost of advertising. the average carrier spends about $400 per new customer sign up.Then there is the commision payout for the dealer or agent who signed up tht new customer, it's safe to say that the dealer get a nice commision for a new contract. That is why carriers lose money the very first year that you are with a new customer. If you have a plan for around 40.00 a month it would take that carrier about 12 months to get their money back from you. So as you see, it is not just the money lost on the equipment itself. There is alot more to figure into it!

Poor ATT... they aren't making any money... how sad...
Well, if their customer service practices were more inclined towards cutomer service maybe I'd have stuck with them since ATT was the first cell phone carrier signed up with. And now with this unlocking business... that is NO way to build customer loyalty. T-Mobile spends just as much in advertising too, but they are there for me when I need them. That's why I am sticking with them.

@devis45
hate to tell you that money is the name of the game. Profits control everything. Look at Tmobile, until recently they have been a money losing company. Why do you think they've changed the name so many times. They keep being bought and sold because they cannot turn a profit. The parent company DT is still looking to unload Tmobile USA to Cingular or AT&T. Now you can keep whining about unlocked phones and how great Tmoble is but for me I'll stay with a stable company with a name that has stood the test of time for 137 years. When Tmobile goes through another name change in the future and you know they will, will you stay with them and praise how wonderful they are?

that I dont know... If they get bought by ATT or some other obscure company then I assume i'll have to look at their service. If it is sadisfactory, why not... if not... back to Verizon.
The unlocking business is just one thing that has upset a lot of people. There's more problems though, just read around this forum. However, just like ATT, all other carriers dish out money for their advertising, dealer costs and such. So in the end what matters is who can keep the customers.

And thanks for pointing out that they've been loosing money until recently bigdawg. That seems to indicate they're no longer loosing money, but they've still been able to keep their customers happy. So I guess they trimmed off some fat they didn't need - but they're STILL unlocking phones. So if they're still able to unlock phone, and they've hit profitability, or are at least breaking even - why can't ATT do the same?
Hmm

um, i can't say that ATT has been around that long, this is the wireless division which is a different company, the part that has been around for ever is actualy the least profitable part of the company, there have been roumors that its going to get sold off. normal long distance and local phone coverage aren't very good anymore and the prices have sky rocketed. how many of you out there even have a hard line anymore? i know i don't.
