In the latest developments, Samsung have internal documents which show concepts which are rectangular in shape with rounded corners as early as 2006.
Although, later on, internal emails from google appear to warn Samsung about the GlxS similarity to the iPhone.

on the other hand it seems Apple cannot get themselves away from the bar touchscreen design concept for half a decade now that we may not be able to see any innovatively designed apple device in the near future until someone on their office throws some bold idea - how I wish it comes now - help Samsung and other copycats move on
btw, why is Apple not suing Meizu?
