Its not so much about the winning, rather that some people don't get votes which they otherwise would deserve. That's the only fault with the voting but theres no way to police it.
I remember last year there was one particular month where the winning photo in most peoples opinions was average to poor. But what mattered most was that some of the entrants were quite disappointed they didn't get a single vote. Which was surprising because some were really good images.
see, its not only me that notice this.
please watch this video on youtube to understand better why i proposed this system

Great, you're not the only one that noticed... lots of people join cults too, does that make it a better organization?
And SORRY, but it IS about WINNING or would we even be entering/voting at all??? to say that "some people don't get votes which they otherwise would deserve" is ridiculous... If I wanted to vote for "that" image, wouldn't I have? You can't force votes out of me if I only like one image and its unfair to weigh that vote less points because I have the ability to make a decision (I'm sure even you would agree with that, I hope)... So stop trying to pat everyone on the A$$ --- if your so concerned with giving everyone a warm hug for entering, why not rank every photo so EVERYONE in essence gets a vote... YEAH, that is ridiculous, isn't it?!?!- I'm glad you get it.
This is just silly and I hope the collective of this board doesn't allow this simple & fun shootout to become some elaborate process just so a few feelings aren't hurt because they didn't get anyone to vote for them.

lol.. I dont get it why you are so against to this new system.
or do you really need a third party account that never participated in the contest or even out of esato forum to suggest this idea so only that way will convince you that this isnt about butthurted people, but a fair contest.
if the picture is good, it will win in any system.
it will be on the top on my proposed system, and also the current system.
i dont see why you would be so against it. Unless you voted for the lesser one? Only god knows.. Lol

In photography its very hard to say that one photo is better than anothers. A photograph speaks to each individual in a different way. Etaab mentioned Cupcakes zoo photo with the elephant been better than most the entries yet she didnt get much votes. I considered voting for it but just couldnt. The water pond on the left of the photo had been chopped. If that photo had been taken a little bit more to the left where the whole water pond showed it would have been a winner for me. Some photos are taken where no cropping is neccessary first time round. Some are taken where cropping is neccessary to save the photo.
I dont know why im waffling on here other than to say 1 vote is all that is needed if people just take more time and put more thought into that 1 vote. You can vote one day and choose a photo and vote the very next day with the same selection of photos and choose differently. Photography also depends on your mood.

A 3 vote system requires more effort from the point of view of the voter and the calculator. It is also completely unnecessary nigh on detrimental to the competition as it gives dishonest voters triple the opportunity to vote 'against' a good photo.
If you openly admit a 3 vote system wouldn't effect the outcome why push it so hard?
I don't want to discourage progressive thinking or new ideas but we should have sense enough to know when, after evaluation, an idea doesn't make the grade.
How about this, we let the previous winner decide the voting system for their month's theme? Only this may be even more confusing as it could change every month.
Another thing, why is the suggestion a 3 vote system instead of a 2 vote (2 points for 1st choice, 1 point for second) system? Or why not rank all the entries top to bottom and the number of points run according to the number of entries? Either of these two make more sense than a 3 vote, but still neither I'd prefer over a straight forward, simple for everyone, 1 vote system.

@ricky
it will have no effect on the very best pjoto, but there is a point where two or more are equally good in that month,
this way the winner will have lesser chance of getting sabotaged votes. See the video.
@hobbs
this is not just about last month.
but i seen it long ago.
and yes, choosing the best one is hard, that why the voting system must be upgraded too.
once you have voted, you cnnot changed it. Unlike the entries, you are allowed to change the photo.

Why complicate things if the same picture end up winning ?
I say stick to the old system, vote for the picture you like the most

do not misread my statement,
i said IF with a big IF the picture is the best. It should win easily in my system.
but not the same for the pictures that are equally good.
take a ferrari, it will win over a daihatsu anytime.
but if compare to lamboghini, it wont be so easy win

Why don't we just vote on which voting system to use... seeing as thesun doesn't like our current voting system of 1 vote per person system, I propose we vote on it.... here is how it will work;
1) everyone ranks their preference for voting system in descending order of their preference-
a- One vote per entry
b- two votes per entry
c- three votes per enty
d- a vote for each entry
2) You write down your votes on 3x5 index cards (with rank included) and mail them to hihihans.
3) hihi will then sort the cards in the order he feels they are valid and mail them to thesun
4) thesun then chooses the top three cards and ranks them 1 to 3 where the number 2 rank is the winner!!!!
We all agree to then to use that voting system for the shootout going forward.... wooohoo

I like that @mlife but that could be done easier. just the one vote one point system and number two wins
