LMAO @ newbie...
no thats how desperate people act, it has nothing to do with leadership... Nokia used to make nice phones I even have some of them myself, but ever since SE and some various others broke through into the scene, I have seen nothing but crap, feature loaded crap and even more crap from Nokia, the ratio here in just my city alone which was once dominated by Nokias is dwindling real fast it seems the phones you see now are SE, Samsung, Siemens and Kyocera and so on rarely do you run across anyone with a Sl'okia... you wonder why? I say that they are desperatley trying to win the market over...

I have to take issue with \"Nokia... leading the way\" into the \"space age\".
The crown for technology leadership doesn't belong to Nokia. Design leadership (which is debatable) - maybe. But let the record show that Nokia wasn't first with a colour screen, or a camera, or polyphonic tones, on their phones.
BTW, the comparison is inaccurate as the P900 is shipping and the 7700 will only be out in Q2 '04 (am I wrong?) Five months is a long time...

I guess Nokia's trying the change the way a phone looks... thinking that it would be a selling point. First they came out with the ultra-stylish 8810 (cigarette lighter-looking phones). That was a real marvel at its time being the BMW or Benz of MobilePhones. Then they started experimenting with the keypads (like the 7210, 3650...) They also experimented with gameboy-like phones. The only design innovation that I liked from Nokia are the communicators. Do you think a lot of people want to buy weird-looking phones?!! I don't think so. If the P800 looked weird enough, what would you make of the 7700???
They should have just made a newer communicator. But I don't think they are since they started moving to touch screen.

The thing that most people seemed to have missed is that the 7700 has EDGE support which means (if any operator in Europe ever gets around to implementing it) you can get about 384 k/s on the downlink (with no-one else in your cell, a following wind, etc. etc.)
Now that is an interesting proposition, almost 3G access speed from 2.5/2.75G technology.
For those in the know all that the operators require for EDGE is a base station software upgrade as it just changes the coding technique for GPRS, a much cheaper way to provide 3G access speeds.
If only the P900 had EDGE I might just consider buring a hole in my wallet................
this seem to be a big difference between Europe and the US
in the US EDGE is considered 3G pretty much. In Europe we consider it a worthless technology as we're going for 3G (UMTS) directly...
In the long run this will make US fall behind (or not catch up is probably a better way to describe it)
Many countries in Europe already have 3G up and running. My guess that in 1 year 3G will explode and the amount of 3G phones available will increase dramatically. We'll have 4 3G networks in Sweden by summer next year at the latest. Most probably the second one will open before christmas and the other 2 first quarter next year...
Then 3G is in business...

I agree that the picture (shape and colouring) of the 7700 makes it appear to be weird compared to traditional phones, PDAS and Smartphones. My thinking is that Nokia are trying to start a new line of devices. A device that is more about visual entertainment on the move (video, music, games) and less about voice comms. The comms technology (Edge, 3G, WiFi, etc) will be used for mainly for entertainment. I assume the user clinics that Nokia hold have shown that the shape they have selected is comfortable for use as an entertainment device. Lets hope someone from Esato sees one in the flesh and tries to use it then we'll see what it is really about.

not to sure about the shape but was reading some info on the phone today and it was saying it will be able to record video.
also the biggest news was that by added an attachment it could pick up and be able to watch digital tv.
this mag was saying its the new thing for mobile in 2004/05.
