> Sony Ericsson Has dumped P800
Bookmark topic
Maybe you people dont know the whole story. I used to be an SE fanatic till the day SE made the following announcement on their developers forum:
Author: SE Dev Support
Date: 01-Dec-2003 15:54 GMT EST
Subject: Official Answer on Upgrade of P800
Message:
Sony Ericsson has decided not to offer an upgrade to P800 owners from UIQ 2.0 to UIQ 2.1. It is not possible to offer an upgrade as there are hardware upgrades in the P900 which mean that 2.1 would not work in an optimal way on the P800.
- UIQ 2.1 requires extra system memory, therefore the system memory in the P900 has been increased from 16 MB to 32 MB. Employing a more memory-consuming user interface would reduce the amount of available space for features such as calendar, contacts and email.
- The P900`s screen supports 65k colours, while the P800 supports 4k colours.
- The size of the screen, when flip closed, is larger in the P900 than in the P800.
The P800 is a future-proof device which will continue to offer what was promised at the time of launch and that can be continuously updated with new 3rd party applications and content. There are more than 500 applications available for the P800 and close to all new applications which are written for UIQ 2.1 will run without any modifications also on UIQ 2.0.

And yes I agree that there is no room for UIQ 2.1 BUT SE clearly states on the above message that there will be no future firmware upgrades for P800. THAT IS A SHAME when P800 still has some SERIOUS BUGS like the disappearing Application List (they didn't fixed it even at the latest firmware) the awfully programmed video player that is uncapable of more than 4-5fps on full screen mode when the beta camcoder player can play 15fps at resolution of 208x320 and ABOVE ALL if you talk to programmers and developers you will find out that SE never gave any documentation on P800's APIs and that's the reason why P800 doesn't have a videorecorder (ask the developer of eye camcoder who started developing a camcoder for P800 but abandoned the development when SE refused to give any help on API's) that is also the reason why P800 doesn't have a fax application and so on.
I was a fanatic supporter of SE but SE seems to becoming another NOKIA and SE's pleased customers are becoming victims of marketing strategies that only Nokia used to have.
If SE doesn't want to loose its market share like Nokia did for the very first time during Q3 of 2003 (analysts say that Nokia lost market share cause of the introduction of many new models with minor changes) they ll better give support to the people that paid for a P800 like they used to do with older models like T68.
And yes SE didn't give all things promised on P800's manual. On P800's manual says that home firmware upgrades should be possible as they are with P900 but SE never did that, and as you see on their official answer on their developers support ONLY 3rd party development from now on!!!!!!!

I hope this time you will manage to read between those lines:
The P800 is a future-proof device which will continue to offer what was promised at the time of launch and that can be continuously updated with new
3rd party applications and content.
And all this is from SE's OFFICIAL DEVELOPERS FORUM that you can register and read all about at the Symbian UIQ section here:
http://www.sonyericsson.com/developer/show_forums.do
You will also be able to see and read with your own eyes the kind of support that SE gives to developers and I am sure you won't like it at all!!! And you Welsh don't you have anything to say about all the rest of the above that I wrote about in my post? Isn't it as I say in that post? Since I first bought T68m I never even tried any other mobile phone than SE but this P800 fiasco made me and many other SE users especially P800 users to get mad with SE's latest marketing strategies! The proof of that is the petitions around the internet concerning P800's upgrade! Thousands of people got angry with SE!!!
