Right. I tried to explain in laymens terms that xhtml accessible by T300 is not the html lite full forum version.
We'll use T300 and Z600 is the following story coz those are the ones I'm familiar with.
Now, WAP afaik is commonly used as general word for phone data communication via GSM (as opposed to GPRS) however we'll try to not use the term where it is not appropriate, ok?
WML is a script that can be read by WAP-enabled phones.
XHTML is another script that can be read by
CERTAIN WAP-enabled phones, such as the T300.
Esato has a 'stripped down' forum version available in both scripts. Neither one allows for PM's at this time. Both show all topics in order of 'most recent' and not subdivied into general, P88/P900 or anything.
Now there is also a more sophisticated 'WAP forum version' available, not as stripped down, with the possibility to use PM and a perfect subdivision of all forums. Although written in HTML, this forum has always been too massive for my T300 to handle, in other words I could never access it. I
CAN access it with my Z600, which is just a bit more powerful.
Now as you would have known if you could see artemiy's avatar (and perhaps some historical knowledge on my part) he is in fact posting with a T310. When he talks about xhtml forum and you talk about html lite forum, you 2 are watching very different things.
To experience what artemiy is talking about, next time you surf to Esato on your phone, when prompted to select a version, do
NOT scroll all the way down to 'html lite' but instead take the second available option, which (on a Z600 sd I expect also on a T610) says 'html' only. It is right underneath the option for 'wml'
Open that, and you will see the differences between the lay out of that version and the regular 'lite' version. You will also see that as of yet, PM is not accesible on that version.
Hope this explains it to your satisfaction.
Cheers

So can i do it then? Only joking. So everything appears to be working now, managed to read threads again. Got to admit tho, the mod's on top form here. I sent 2 pm's to them today and within an hour got a reply. You don't get that from other sites i could mention.

as i said in my earlier post, the quality of threads ebbs and flows over time. i suspect the recent flurry of "ignorant/ill-informed" (for wont of a better term) threads are at least in part due to the time of year. a lot of people have been on holidays and so had a bit of spare time on their hands to surf the net (either for fun or to learn more about the phones they got for xmas). as a result more casual users have signed in and asked questions, and it seems a few older members have also got a bit restless over the silly season.
when i first started reading esato in last year (i.e. about 6 months before i joined) i was totally unfamiliar with forum culture and ettiquete. consequently there was a fairly steep learning curve, and i used esato basically as a resource to decide which handset i wanted to buy as my first mobile phone. when i did finally join it was after i had a) bought the phone, and b) when i thought i had a fair grip on the general culture of esato - which is to say that discussion was generally spirited yet still mostly on-topic, with a dose of irreverence and humour.
however there were still a few members who felt compelled to flame left, right and centre over the smallest things. just before masseur was made a mod those people more or less flamed at will, with little restraint other than the beleaguered efforts of tranquil. when poor forum behaviour by a few members becomes common, without any apparent reprimand (i.e. a thread lock or deletion) it's becomes easier for others to fall into the same pattern and therefore becomes the norm. it only takes a handful of people to drag down a whole bunch of others, and i'm not ashamed to say that
i fell victim to this myself (check the whole thread - it's only short) - although i had been having a fairly trying day to begin with. i'm sure most of us can think of times when we got pulled down to a level where we never intended to go. this particular incident was fairly early in masseur's career as a mod, and a few friendly words from him put me back on track. within a few weeks of masseur's moderatorship, the cart blanche flaming started to subside, mainly i think because a few judiciously locked threads make a fairly good object lesson.
*...hmmm....perhaps i'm still trying to expiate my guilt...*
the point i'm broadly trying to make is that this forum is what
we make it. if you don't like the way things are going, don't just complain but try to think of how you can improve it. it might be as simple as pm-ing a mod, or posting a friendly link to the forum rules or search results, or even just a short piece of advice and a helpful topic link. beating newbies over the head with
isn't going to help much because it only happens after the question has been asked, but that doesn't mean you can't do it in a nice way. perhaps the only way to solve this would be to make the "search" on the homepage
much more prominent.
if you don't have anything nice to say, at least try to be civil - or help the mods out because they need to be pointed in the right direction in a forum which averages over a thousand posts per day.
of course, if someone is deliberately flame-baiting then i suppose a carefully aimed kick in the pants wouldn't hurt
(but still let a mod know about it).
