blackspot: price as of the v802se as of nov 19 is still unannounced.
however, i estimate that the japan price for this fon, for a new user switching from a competitor brand to vodafone japan, will be able to buy it for between 25,000 and 28,000 jpy.
a current user of vodafone japan wishing to upgade to this handset from an older model will be charged a surcharge of between 25% and 100% of the new user cost, based on a sliding scale of how recently he bought his current fone. more being paid by people who have their current fon for less than 1 year; less of a surcharge paid by people having their current fon for between 1 and 2 years.
by the way, fon costs for the hardware in japan are subsidized by the network, so you can not compare the cost of the fon in japan versus the cost of the fon elsewhere, usually. however, in the 802se case, since this is the first global launch of the handset also being able to access the wcdma band in japan, it will be interesting to do a later comparison of actual costs for the fon. old data not relevant to this new model.
additionally: there are problems of some kind, either supply chain, or (i hope not) software/firmware related: the launch date as of today is still unannounced in japan. there had been rumors of firmware problems on this handset. unless they are adding features that the advanced demanding mobile fon market of japan requires to market successfully that might not be available in the non-japan version. i think that scenario not very likely, and that there are just firmware problems that are delaying it.
one more thing: i attach a link to a (japanese language) site that has a pre-release version of a catalog of the japanese model. worthwhile to see the fotos if you cant read the japanse. but pls do see the spec page. since the "review" by another forum poster indicates different specs than what is in this japanese catalog it may be interesting to note.

hello lynn,
there is no confirmed date on the launch of 802se.
however, it is listed and shown prominently in the December catalog that was issued on Dec 1. but, it gives no actual launch date. what this means is that a December launch is almost certain, but, there is deifinitely some sort of (1) supply problem, or (2) system/firmware problem.
there is one bit of news, however: the cost to a consumer for the 802se, is set between jpy19,500 and jpy31,000. the lower cost is paid by a new subscriber to vodafone japan switching from another network; the higher cost is paid by a current vodafone japan customer just changing to this handset.
one more bit of news: there are several vodafone retail shop operator's discussion forums in japan, and the general concensus is that the fone to wait for is the 902sh. the 902sh has something like 80% popularity among the seven 3g handsets that vodafone japan will be launching over the next 60 days. the 802se is way down in the popularity rankings, at only 11% (it is number 2 however).
the reason for this is that the se model has virtually none of the standard types of customization options built into japanese cell fone maker's handsets. i agree with this. the 802se has so little ability to customize any of it.
here is a link to a page that shows all 7 fones (in japanese).

here is a worthwhile page to view.
it shows the winter line up of new 3g fones in japan, from docomo, au, and vodafone.
when you see the fones from au and docomo, you will realize what vodafone is up against in capturing any market share in japan.
