Got one for a day to test it out and ... it's not what I thought !
I was impressed by the size of the thing, it's damn huge ... and heavy for what it is, the cheap plastic feeling and the bad construction makes it worse.
I couldn't really enjoy the games cause it doesn't fix in the hands or I have abnormal hands. The games looks ok, I had the impression that my K700 could do the same (matter of speaking).
I can't compare it with the psp as I don't have one but it seems that Nintendo have hit the ground now, they are far behind in the console war.

I agree fully with what you said, I had the PSP and then decided to buy the DS too.
The DS is miles behind the PSP (in my view)
The PSP fits in the hand really well, but the DS is just so un-ergonomic to hold
Had to sell my DS in the end for £90.00 with mario and ended up buying 2 more games for my PSP.
