I don't think I like the new button layout.

I always thought the use of softkeys was to lessen the amount of function buttons needed on the handset (the softkeys played the role of different buttons); thats what made that bit different.

Now, with the joystick and new layout (like on the Z750i) the total number number of buttons to press has risen to 12 (5-way d-pad and the rest).

Reminds me of the old Sharp handsets - there were so many buttons to press you didn't know what the hell you were doing.

Bad move! Can anyone explain the advantages of this new layout?

though you might not agree, they've burned enough money in anthropological studies to realize this is what most people prefer over the old button layout

I just thought, 'simpler the better'. So how do we now select the middle soft key option?

EDIT: Actually its not more buttons, so forget what I said.

no matter what happens, i still think there's a value of the C button and the need to distinguish that with the Back button; especially when we're getting more and more files on the phone, multimedia files, contacts, PDA records etc

that's why all Japanese phones have a C button right underneath the D-pad; personally I think the best configuration would be 2 soft keys, 1 5 directional d-pad, hang up and dial buttons, plus a C button

More Sony Ericsson Handsets for the US

Yesterday, Sony Ericsson announced two handsome new US phones: the Z750, a flip phone with a 2-megapixel camera which will work on Cingular's high-speed HSDPA network, and the W580, a very slim slider phone with the Walkman music look and branding. That's just the beginning of the announcements this year, the execs said.

z750i supports java platform 8 (JP-8 )
and under JP-8 specification
it supports "Mobile Sensor API (JSR 256) for accelerometer applications"

that means Z750i supports accelerometer!!

First, I really think xumedo's right. At least the Z750 has it that way. What's worrying is the protos we saw of sofia. And that low end proto that popped up recently. Also a C has to be there, how else do you delete text if the red key exits and a softkey would be way too odd.

And just because the Z750 has support for software that supports an accelerometer does not mean it has one on board.
