About GPRS and the network, GPRS is a layer over the regular 2G infrastructure and is an integral part of what the operator runs. As such, with GPRS, your network operator is your ISP. This means that MTN GPRS is an integral part of MTN's operations and cannot be run by a 3rd party.
Remember that GPRS is actually run using excess capacity on the network.
MTN was slow in rolling out GPRS because it came into the country with standard 2G infrastructure, was caught completely unawares by Glo, and could not upgrade as fast as vmobile since MTN has a wider coverage (meaning more infrastructure to upgrade to 2.5G).
Hope that wasn't too complicated.
By the way, MTN GPRS is still free. That's what I am using with my laptop right now.
