Firstly - for any close up shots... turn on Macro (either through the camera menu, or by pressing 4)...
When you go to take a photo, only half press down the button... it will auto-focus (green light at the top left of the screen will stay on and it will beep when this happens) - once you're happy with the shot; press the shoot button all the way down.

The black and white/colour was done by photoshop on some of them - but for the ones I posted up here I used Picasa (free photo management software made by Google!) It has some really easy to use photo manipulation for fixing up contrast, light levels, colour, red eye...etc. I also use this software to store my photos in groups, tag them, find them - and most usefully, in conjuction with Hello, I upload them directly to my photo blog

@kas thanks mate, I knew how to use the macro mode, but wondered how you managed to manipulate the picture the way you did. Think maybe I need to get me photoshop thanks also for the link to Picasa and I hope you post some more here
