Actually from Gsmarena review the display is only 4K when 4K content is run otherwise it is a 1080p display

In this case, however, it does not affect the performance as the phone runs in 1080p mode most of the time. That's until you feed it with quality 4K footage where it really starts making use of all the pixels

You have got to be kidding me! This thing got 72h on the Endurance while running parts of the UI in HD1080P!? That is even more worrying.

I am willing to bet it will struggle to get 6-7hours SOT unless you resort to using Stamina Mode.

It is a decent effort by Sony this phone, the first phone that has truly impressed probably since the Xperia Z3, but it seems it will struggle to truly compete with the likes of Galaxy S8, LG G6, OnePlus 3T, Google Pixel XL etc... Certainly from a Battery Life point of view. The LG G6 managed 72h with a IPS LCD Display that consistently works at 2K.

Hopefully the phone Sony announces at IFA will address the XZP's shortfalls, this year is flying by, not too long now and IFA will be on our doorstep.

I also hope Sony will get a grip on supply, they should have just gone with the Snapdragon 821 OR waited to announce this at IFA to get around the 835 production delays.

Actually XZ premium battery is similar to S8 in web browsing but fares worst in video playback. If we assume that at video 4k is used then the result is not too bad. Either way 72 hours is not bad .

But I am curious if gsmarena claim about the screen is correct

Just because the content is rendered as 1080p, it doesn't mean that only 1/4 of the screen pixels are active. Rendering in 1080p is only helping the chipset so that it doesn't have to process all 8 million pixels, but the screen will consume same energy regardless if the image sent to it is in 4K, 1080p or even 100x100 pixels.

That's why 4K display is very useless, not only there is no difference whether it's 1080p or 4K (simply because the screen is too small), but the battery takes the hit for that. It's funny how people are fine with 15" laptops with 1080p screens but are crying to get a 4K on 5,5" mobile phone -_-.

We'll have to see what other reviewers say. The reason it's similar to S8 in Web Browsing is due to AMOLED being less efficient with White vs. when Displaying darker colours, but it is good to see how far AMOLED has come, it's now on par with IPS LCD when it comes to Displaying heavy amounts of White, if not better as the S8 has a larger Display yet managed a similar time (1minute better, lol!).

This review is revealing a lot of things it seems.

People always have something to complain. People were complaining about camera and screen but Sony fixed that with Sony xperia Xz premium but now you guys are complaining about the battery life. 72 hours of battery is not bad but why you people made it look like it's really bad. People said 4k is an overkill and useless because most of the time it's in 1080p but you hypocrites didn't complain about the s8 2k display running in 1080p and BTW anything over full HD is an overkill. GSM arena uses virtual methods on testing battery so it's not accurate. Wait for real world battery usage review then if you want to complain just complain all you want. For those of you who complain about the bezels. Well, xzp have the largest front and rear camera sensor with dual stereo speakers. Samsung has a tiny sensor and no stereo speakers so stfu

The S8 allows you to choose between Resolution, it doesn't decide for you, just as the S7 in Nougat, you have resolution options.

What's wrong with 1080p? The s8's pentile matrix is no better than 1080p.

I agree that 4K is useless for mobile phone (unless you have VR), still nice to have for bragging rights 😜

With regards to battery surely it matters if the chipset has to process 8 million pixels or less . I am also basing this on the fact that reviewers said that the reason why S8 gets 1080p mode by default is to preserve battery life

It doesn't matter which resolution you choose to render they battery life it'll be pretty much the same.

For example in samsung phones you have the choice to choose from QHD to FHD to HD. No matter what resolution you choose battery life will not change much. While it'll certainly help in the gaming performance and overall performance, but it'll not be so helpful in the battery because no matter what you choose battery have to feed all the pixel regardless of the resolution you choose to render.

The same goes for XZP. Even if it's render FHD all the time it still has to fed all those 806ppi. So you see battery life wouldn't change much that much even if they allow it to run 4K all the time. But running at 4K will surely hinder the performance of gaming and overall UI performance. While SD835 gpu is power it's not powerful enough for 4K screen to render it all the time. 835's gpu is very good for QHD display and superb for FHD display.

Besides, you have to remember this is a real RGB display not some half-backed pentile display. Even FHD RGB display has subpixel count that is nearly the same as pentile QHD display. So you see to match the sharpness of 4K RGB display amoled pentile display have to have a display with 5K or 6K resolution. LOL, how bad do you thing S8 would score if it had a 5K or 6K display? 50H or 45 H in gsmarena. Beside Gsmarena's admit that their battery test don't provide real life experience ( no artificial battery life test does ). We'll have to see real world uses.

I know Z5 premium doesn't have stellar battery life in real world situation but XZP is a huge improvement even if you take gsmarena's battery life standard. During that time gsmarena did battery test at 50% brightness. At 50% brightness Z5P luminance was only 78 nit cd/m2
http://www.gsmarena.com/sony_xperia_z5_premium-review-1344p3.php

Now they do battery test at 200 nit cd/m2. So you see even at significantly higher brightness ZXP is able to score much higher number than Z5P. So relax it'll have good battery life. No matter what a certain stupid samdung fanboy say who also lack basic techinical knowledge. LUL.
