It is annoying to see the same item on the desktop inspite of many other updates. Or is it due to some settings in my phone?
It sounds like the settings on the phone my friend. Go to 'Settings > Set up services', to set the Facebook and Twitter frequency updates.
Everything else such as sms, email and call log, etc, should update as and when they come in.

My box had nothing like that in - but then again it was only £429.99 which is quite cheap for the sim free price I guess.

I have tried that but it does not work. I can see all the updates going to timescape but not on the desktop. All things that I receive the SMS, missed calls never get updated anyways. My friend who has the same phone has the same problem as well.

Try restart your phone.
Everytime I restart, I get the updated entry on the desktop but it does not change everytime an event happens.
