One of the few drawbacks to the excellent Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 is its slightly dated 1.6 version of Android and lack of support for multi-touch, but this could change according to Sony Ericsson.

At the Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 press launch the Ericsson rep responded to the criticisms of the outdated OS by mentioning a “very big update” was due in Q2 of 2010. A very big update leads us to believe that the X10 will get Android 2.1.

Multi-touch is also anticipated as the limitations aren’t believed to be hardware based, and is believed to be something on the cards and an update is also expected for this drawback.

The Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 is still an advanced smartphone that has a 8.1 megapixel camera (with geotagging, image stabiliser, 16x digital zoom, smile detection, facial recognition), 1Gb memory and 4″ touchscreen.

The X10 handset is available on the link through all the big networks and free from £30 per month with Vodafone and available with up to £60 auto cashback.

The Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 features a stunning 4.0 inch touchscreen display which employs capacitive technology for a more intuitive user experience.

The Xperia X10 runs the Android operating system letting you download apps from the Android Market and access Google content on your phone. Timescape puts your contacts and communications into one place so you can start up a conversation via SMS and continue it by email. The X10 sports an 8.1 Megapixel camera with multiple face detection and autofocus, HSDPA and Wi-Fi, GPS, 1GB internal memory and a memory card slot.

Other glitches I've experience:
(1) the calendar app won't sync with my Google calendar, though it shows my Google account as checked in preferences;
(2) several times, mediascape has been unable to find the media I've loaded to the SD card until I've used some other app to play it first;
(3) sony media sync still claims there's no SD card mounted, even though the card is visible both to Bluetooth File Exchange and markspace's Missing Sync; and
(4) Voice Dialer (a great idea) is wildly unpredictable!

Amongst the best app's I've downloaded is Astro, which is an old fashioned file manager with media playing capability (I assume it's just accessing the native OS for that, though). It can find everything on the SD card clear as day, and has good interfaces for playback of videos (automatically shifts to landscape) and music (shows graphics nicely).

For those with exchange account email (such as Zimbra) Touchdown by nitrodesk works great, with push.

@drad ..... how wierd.

1) mine syncs without an issue (usually within seconds of changes being made !)
2) mediascape has never failed to list new additions !!!
3) haven't got a mac so can't comment on media sync I'm afriad ..... !
4) ah ... yes ... voice dial ... fun isn't it

I haven't managed to get the voice dialler to work (like you) reliable, but that probably
my dodgy accent Mediago seems to be pretty flawless in regard to seeing SD cards
and getting data to the handset without problems - yes it's slow in creating the library
if you have a lot on the computer !

Was quite literally at the counter yesterday ready to get the x10..but, i didn't want to play the "early adopter" again as i have done in the past with nearly all handsets...so i'm gonna wait a few months and see how the x10 and s.e progress...

(1) Works fine for me, within seconds! Also contacts data! When I change something in Google on another computer, it is immediately on my X10! Even when I add pictures to contacts! It's great! It seems, you have a taskkiller which is killing some tasks which shouldn't be killed!

(2) I am putting MP3s from my machine on the SD-Card and till now it never failed to find the media in mediascape after that. Again: it seems, you have a taskkiller which is killing some tasks which shouldn't be killed!

(3) Didn't get the problem.

(4) Didn't try it out.

I have the 1.14 firmware and I haven't try to update yet.

Bye, happy X10 user!

@drad:
(1) the calendar app won't sync with my Google calendar, though it shows my Google account as checked in preferences;

Have you from the start screen pressed the menu button and under Settings/Data sync made a choice in the "Choose sync program" (or what it is called in english) that you want to use Google?
Then in the next menu you choose Google sync and mark the calendar (and contacts).

I find it irritating that when you save a contact's phone number with "+" before the country code the sign disappears when you sync with your Google-account. The phonebook and the Google-account doesn't match 100% with the different fields.
