SE doesn't have anything right at it but they do have it more or less surrounded, music-wise. A smartphone would be a long shot thout.

Maria??? It would kick the 5700's butt and be an excellent rival to Nokia's rumoured upcoming n81. For once, SE could get their model out first and Nokia could be chasing them.

Well TBH, I'm find the rumour of the Sofia in October getting more and more plausible every day, which is unfortunate.

Read this in the MR review of the K810:

If you understand that Sony Ericsson K810i released is not an expansion model series and replacement K800i, but only as a supplement to this model, all into place. By mid-May, when Sony Ericsson K810i be found at the main model will be even more massive, it can design a tire, plus the new version of the slightly higher price (about 50 euros, plus possible different versions and configuration). Given the heightened demand for Sony Ericsson K790/K800, it is expected that this office will become popular. An interesting solution, which so far does not have in its class. Although, in principle, it is to some extent a Nokia N73, it is true, this machine is very different ideology.

Which if I understand correctly, means that the K810 should be readily availabe by mid May. That sorta kills the possiblity of the Sofia coing out in June so I'm pretty much convinced that the October date is true.

That's where my disappointment with SE begins. Although, I don't classify myself as a high end user - I'm content with a 'dumbphone' which is stable and efficient - but I'm disappointed with SE's strategy this year. The endless spinoffs of the K750 spec wise is wearing thin, especially because it isn't supplemented by any new tech.

Think of the specs on all these phones - W580, W660, W880, W610, and K550. All 2MP phones, plus or minus 3G and QVGA screens. Nothing really exciting. And what else? The highest tech for the year happens to be for North America in the form of the Z750. First SE phone with HSDPA.

SE is now becoming very stagnant technology wise. Ever since the K750 the amount of innovation that we're used to is flat lining. All the rumoured phones are not appearing - Maria, Elena, BRAVIA, and Sofia.

The strategy now seems very risky, and especially because right now it is make or break for SE. They seem to be being very complacent, and I hope that it doesn't affect them adversely. This strategy, although effective now, is going to falter soon.

Nokia have already moved onto using S60 for mainstream phones. 5700, N73, 6290 just to name a few. Nokia is making progress in the mid range (I'm not talking about high end) unlike SE in an overall sense. SE has to start building a base for the future.

UPDATE:

May 8 announcement (very iffy).

NOTE: I'm going to keep the list as it is. It's more of a tracker for all the rumours for this year and keeping all the false rumours makes for a good reference.

they have changed their strategy, that is a solid fact by now. but i think it is a very critical time to do so. personal opinion: i think such strategy should have been used two years from now. especially after strenghtening their smartphone position.

if sofia is not even introduced by may, i think lot of SE casual users would "temporarily shift" to another brand. but after that, if SE release great device we'll see that these specific users will comeback to their beloved brand.

if they opted the new strategy, this should be considered as a transition period . and all these handsets :w880. W610. W580. K810 should keep a normal flow of money to SE account. after that, when they intend to release their phones, they would shock the market a bit.

one more thing: i think that after the announcement of the iPhone, many companies started to think how to challenge such device. SE chose to shy away from this crucial fight for a later time...

PS: all my post is based on personal opinion. they might be wrong or true.

I don't think they'll keep all the high-end mobiles for the end of the year.Thats my opinion but I expect SE to come with something interesting for the summer which we didn't think about(or better,DID think about ).If they save all the high-end phones for Q3-Q4 it will become a kind of "messy" for the customers - too many new phones for such a short time - who knows what he needs to buy,if the most advertised features are the same - 5Mpix camera(Sofia and UIQ device) and so on(I mean that other brands will also have started selling mobiles which will have similar features)

why are all of you so focused on Sofia???

there are more good high end phones and one or two of them could be released on may 8.

who needs a 5mpix camera in a handset???

my old TM100 (Sharp) has only 0.3mpix and thats enough for its screen.

and if you want to watch your pics on pc 3.2mpix are also enough as for normal pics

you only need 5mpix if you want to have a picture in poster size

thats my opinion^^
