"Tom Waldner: Jeffery,
I can elaborate more on the Arc design language.
This range uses the Arc design language that we started using on the first Arc product in 2011. This was a unique design back in 2011 and it was rather controversial- internally and when we presented it to operators. It was not always positive- it was too challenging for some.
We really believed in it and we felt it would offer consumer benefits a be unique. Eventually this proved to be the case when we saw the sell thru.
So when we had the chance we wanted to use that design asset again !"

"Tom Waldner: Hej Brad,
One of our goals is to have a unique design that at first look is Sony- and that you can see without seeing a logo. The other goal is to underline and emphasize the display, and finally add UI and HW integration. We put a of thought into this and had a large number of ideas on this- we worked with our tech people to see if they anything that would enable deisgn ideas. One of the tech ideas was to make a transparent antenna. That led to the design concept, that in turn was developed into 3 products."

"Tom Waldner: Brian,
If i could choose without any technical considerations we would make a solid Stainless steel phone. But its really challenging- the antenna requirments ( RF performance) are really high and the requirements are getting tougher. All these exotic materials usually interfere with the RF. So we have to work around this."
On choosing exotic materials

"Tom Waldner: Hej Brad,
Actually we are sitting in a room with about 35 models that are visionary design studies for the future. Many of them have unique formfactors and go beyond traditional smartphone thinking.
Within the framework of mainstream smartphone, for the NXT series, the form factor is unique with the transparent antenna.
We are always exploring and experimenting in parallel with the pipeline development work."
On next generation design and if sony is willing to go out of the box

"Tom Waldner: Hej Vernon,
Based upon consumer observation and our market experiences in Japan we see this as a growing trend. In Japan, water resistance is required.
Our products with waterproofness are appreciated. Personally i love them. I´m into water sports like paddling and kitesurfing and use my phone in those situations.
It also helps when my boy grabs my phone and drops it in the bathtub..."
on possibility of future phones with water proof certificaiton
Its kind of old, but I just read them and thought its worth sharing here.

Ridicolous! Why?! I hope other manufacturers won't go this way. Putting 1280x720 screen on 5 inches gives 293 PPI. Which is more than enough. Bigger screen resoultion means only much higher battery consumption and CPU overload.
I hope that this ridicolous race will be over, and companies will go for goodies that Nokia showed this year (great quality microphone, xenon flash, bigger sensors)...

Who would you like to lose several hours of battery life just for 1080p?
