it's certainly not the most shining moment in our country's history, but in a number of ways the whole situation is unique to sydney with the clash of gang and beach culture. i find the bias in reporting and blame quite shameful as well.

I found the whole racial aspect of the riots very disturbing...I hope things have calmed down now?

there is a lot more to it than is being reported in the international media. sydney has a long history of gang warfare, and the events of the last few days have actually been almost a decade in the making. the murdered lifeguard was merely the proverbial straw that broke the camel's back. racial tension has been fomenting in the poorer suburbs of sydney for some time since the gangs are formed on racial/cultural lines - most notably asians, surfies and lebanese muslims - with the "lebs" generally considered the most violent and aggressive. there is also some evidence to suggest that the initial alcohol-fuelled riot in cronulla was organised and incited by a number of so-called white supremecist and far-right groups.
anyone with a functioning brain cell finds the whole situation deplorable, but the story is a lot older than the last two days.
EDIT: cross-posted to
the aussie race riots thread so i'll continue discussing it there.

much smaller scale and for vastly different reasons. also the instigators in this case were generally "white australians", although reports indicate some of the lebanese revenge attacks are grossly disproportionate to the original riot and targeted innocent people in other suburbs.

That was different issue altogether..in the france case it was poorer under privalaged black and arab races which started it due to the lack of jobs and housing...their pleas were being ignored by the govt so they took to the streets and vented their anger mostly on cars and the police.
