Are you sure about this? Sounds illogical to me.
Despite the presence of a 20-plus megapixel camera, the Sony camera app is focused on taking oversampled images at eight megapixels (in either 4:3 or 16:9 aspect ratios). It’s the same principle (pixel binning) that Nokia’s employing on its latest Lumia 1020 handset — get a more accurate image at a reasonable resolution by combining several pixels into one.
I like 16:9 format over 4:3

pretty sure though not 100%..
considering the 20mp is 4:3 ratio, downsampling to 8mp 4:3 is logical. forcing a 16:9 ratio would require cropping and who wants that?

Thanks, that does make sense. I'll have to inspect 8MP 4:3 vs 16:9 format closely
We went shooting again with our Sony Xperia Z1, after the software update late last month which promised better performance for the camera. We're sorry to say that the update doesn't improve the camera's performance in any significant way.

I just hope Sony isn't BS around with "new" camera update scheduled for Jan. More and more I think this is just wishful thinking before new device comes out and Z1 fails into oblivion (same as Z)
Cheers,
Miki

the camera update in january is JUST a rumor. there is nothing scheduled officially. remember that.
i'm hoping there will be a change log released soon for the 4.3 update coming next month. hopefully, that will include some camera improvements.
it's funny that some sites report significant improvements while others don't. personally, i haven't seen any major improvements though except the camera apps do load faster than before, which is nice.
also, as i said, i'm not 100% the 16:9 8mp shot isn't downsampled as well. i just think it makes sense to keep the same aspect ratio in order to prevent cropping or stretching during the pixel binning. just one of those things we'll probably never know ..
i am definitely looking forward to the 4.3 update next month and HOPE it hits early december rather than late. i'd love to have it for the holidays and if there are camera improvements, they'd be very welcome for snapping shots of family and friends.

the biggest improvement I observed in the last update was in 20mp mode, before the update it was unusable (IMO) now it is all I use even though the files are 3x the size, I would love to see a 16.9 16mp option also - yes it would be slightly cropped but would be my preference default mode
although I must admit I'm still experimenting - there are a lot of options to go through and some may be better than others for difference scenes

No Moogoo I think there is a slight confusion.
8 MP = 3264 x 2448. All phones with 8 MP cameras have this resolution. Only available in manual mode as option on Z1.
8MP 16:9 - 3840 x 2160 = Downsampled 20 MP. In Superior Auto Mode
So either only 8 MP 16:9 (Superior Auto) uses downsampling or both 4:3 and 16:9 8 MP (superior auto/manual) use downsampling. I'm not sure which one

well you can pick 8mp 4:3 or 16:9 in manual mode, but forced to use 8mp 16:9 in SA mode.
If SA is the only mode that has downsamples photos then that's pathetic. cause we all know SA produces far inferior photos than manual mode. So what gives?

Yeah, I was wondering the same
Guess only a Sony engineer can give us the answer

i think SA mode has difficulty with auto focus for some reason. which is why images don't turn out that great. in bright daylight, it produces very nice photos, but in low or dark light, it just doesn't. turning on the flash, you do get much better photos but sometimes you don't want that flash on!
fact is, it just doesn't do as amazing of a job selecting the right mode for the job that sony thinks it does. as smart as it might be, it's smarter than an experienced photographer/user.
would love to be able to pick the brain of a sony engineer who konws the details of the Z1's camera but that kind of access is pretty much impossible.. heh
