The level of exposure is different between both pictures. Perhaps taken at different time hence it is hard to judge. Personally, I like the M5 image more than the Note 5. You can see that the detail on the white roof is more on M5 compared to Note5. The best way to judge for details is to look at lines. Trees are not good indicator because of artefacts (noise) that might be mistaken as details.

I agree with p910. Xperia m5 has better details than note 5. Just look at the roof lines, M5 beat the hell out of it. Note 5 just oversharpen things that leads to lost of details

Both phones have PDAF, IMX230 for M5, and IMX240 for Note 5, so both should be equally fast for focus. What is interesting is that the Note 5 has 2 stabilization systems, OIS for photos, and VDIS for videos. I believe it works like the iphone 6 plus, which also uses OIS only for photos and turns it off for videos and goes with digital stabilization.
Real world photos are usually good for comparison, but using the GSMArena camera comparison tool for M5 and note 5, shows the following
http://www.gsmarena.com/piccm[....]=1&idPhone1=7431&idPhone2=7464
Using the ISO chart, it feels as if the M5 is sharper than the note 5, scaled to 12mp and not scaled.

Yes, the comparison tool on GSMarena is good indication for sharpness and details. Based on that tool, it is clear that M5 has the edge over Note 5. The iphone 6+ is totally crap compared those two.

Yeah gentlemen, we are on the verge of seeing another smartphone competition, with an image sensor with differentiated technology SONY... If i could bet all my chips, I would say that the new Huawei Nexus 6P uses the image sensor SONY EXMOR R IMX117CQT

P.S: The New Nexus has everything to be one of the best cameraphones out there, at least in theory !!!

After looking at Meizu Pro 5 with IMX230 camera samples, all i can say is F-U-C-K YOU SONY!
That phone produces by a big margin sharper images that any Sony phone can achive. No blur, everything is in focus, processing is done right... and it is Sony's sensor.
Seriuosly, WTF is going on with the camera sensors that Sony is using in their phones? They look inferior in every aspect even though Sony is claiming that they use "the best and exclusive" for themselves lol.
Just look at the samples from the last post here:

I think someone seriously need to show all the samples comparison to which ever idiot in charger of the Sony mobile camera and tell them to explain. Years after years and they don't seems like they still get it. I thought I have to say GSMarena early Z5 samples still looks the best of compare to anything.

color too, hard to tell in full size when both are not in the correct scale as M5 being much bigger, but if you scaled both to 12MP, M5 definitely capture much more detail if you look at the flowers.
Another thing is many others like messing with the black levels to create and illusion of richer colors. MS has been doing that with the 360 since the very beginning and now with Xbone but now back firing with black crush on lots of xbone games. Seems to be the same case here for phones photoes.
