Sony may have finally moved to 1 flagship per year

The video shows Rikke Gertsen Constein, Art Director at Sony Mobile, talking about the design of the Xperia Z series. Part way through the video when asked about future plans, Constein confirms that they are already working on designs for the second half of 2016, 2017 and 2018.

It is the explicit mention of H2 2016 for the next flagship models that could clearly indicate Sony will not launch a new model in the first six months of 2016. If this turns out to be true, i.e. Sony mobbing to a single flagship release per year, would you be happy? Let us know your comments below.

I read that the development cycle for each flagship could be two - three years, so when the decision to move to one flagship a year was taken, a couple of years ago, there were possibly already two six month flagships in development.

It's been a good thing for Sony I think, because it has enabled them to catch up and now surpass the competition in some key areas, such as 4K video and screen res.

Bad thing for Sony is that they decided to show a new flagship in H2, which means using 9 months old SoC.

yeah, really hope that Z5 ultra with s820 in H1 is real. Always thought they should do phablet in H1 and standard and compact in H2. LG seems to get it with Flex, no need to go head to head with note series in H2. A z ultra is also different enough from Flex to set them apart.

I don't care about phablets, most of the market wants regular phones and that's where Sony won't be competetive.

Doesn't matter. SoC's are only updated once a year. Doesn't matter if its 0 months old, or 9 months old, performance will be the same, unless they design their own cores.

Thing is - Sony's flagship is going to have the best SoC for like 3-4 months. After that it'll have to compete with new flagships that have new SoCs. More - right off the bat it's going to compete with the next iPhone (I read somewhere that surprisingly quite a lot of new Sony buyes previously had an iPhone).

Sony are not alone using this "old" soc. Hello Nexus!

People are just too obsessed with early adoption.
Why don't they learn that early adoption is not necessarily a good thing.
HTC M9 and Xperia 3+ *cough cough*

I am pretty sure that must people prefer an "old" but hassle free soc over early adoption with quirks that take time to sort out.

A very good decision by sony. 1H - mini tab (z ultra) and z tablet. 2H - main, compact and phablet. A new device is compared to an old or current devices owned or on the market, not to a rumored device that will launch in 6 months or more, bought based on the whole package and after having 2-5 years old device. Moreover, i'm sure they have good reasons to choose this strategy over different one.
@penguino
There are always at least 6 months from ifa to mwc for a new qualcomm cpu devices to appear, not 3-4 months, people don't really care for ces announced devices like g flex, they wait either for mwc or ifa. Sony has strong rivals in both H1 and 2H so competing against the new iphone is natural, expected and welcomed and not different then competing against any other rivals like galaxy s7, lg g5, etc. in 1H.
