Nope, it's not a retail unit. I know Marc, and although he says it is, I know Sony Ericsson phones better than that Besides, it's a 256 meg RAM unit.

I popped into O2 Southport today, they are expecting the X1 to be available from 12th October.

Thank you bider, nice review.

Hi Koto,
Defintely the only way you'll know is having one in your own hand. What I can tell you meanwhile is that the higher resolution and pixel density of the Xperia makes small text a lot sharper, more detailed and easy to read than small text in any other movile handset.

In the other hand ANY PICTURE OR VIDEO that you see on your computer is degraded by far with a lower pixel density than the real life Xperia screen. The Xperia has about 100000 pixels per sq in. The iPhone has 27000 and a 15" monitor at 1280 x 1024 resolution has a density per sq inch of only 12000 pixels.
You better look at the real thing.

I ordered mine from www.clove.co.uk - (£515.83 inc VAT); supposedly they're due this week.

On Sept. 24th, on appeal, it was found that Broadcom's video processing patent is invalid:

The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit ruled in Qualcomm's favor on Wednesday in one of the three patents at issue, technology used in video compression in cell phones. It ruled that the patent was invalid and, thus, not infringed.

So, do you think something that can be easily done to the msm7201a chipset used in the US X1 to now enable the video processing hardware (like a firmware / driver update) or is it gimped for good?

Hi all,

Well i mentioned that i thought the text looked very small in most if not all the screens on the X1 and was told that a double tap would zoom in. It appears from this review that you can only do that in Opera and also that you need to open Opera separately as by default it will always use PIE from within your apps when they seek Internet access. I wonder and look forward to seeing just how the text looks in the PIM app for instance and also how text displays your E-Mails and Word documents.

It will be interesting to see how actual users find the text size in daily use but it was something that concerned me a long time ago as text does indeed look very small. Seeing as there is no way of changing text size this could be a real problem for a lot of users IMO.

This really is one of the main plus points of the Bold with a choice of 12 font styles and 8 sizes to choose from it just makes reading text so clear and easy in any app.

Marc

windows mobile does indeed have a setting for font size which affects most screens/menus, and though I wear glasses for reading, the medium setting works perfectly for me so I don't really see an issue here in that regard

my recent experience with the HTC touch diamond with Opera (rather than pie), with its fairly small screen, also never posed a problem with readability without my glasses

so in principal this issue does not concern me at all

From the time the first prototype was made to the release version, certainly, someone at would have noticed if the type was too small to read.
