just got my P990 a couple of days ago, bought in Belgium
firmware:

Tel: R4B001
bluetooth:R4F01
organiser:R2A04
CDA: /55 R1A03
/55 R1A03

If I try to update I get a message that my phone is up to date (yeah right), as far as I know the phone is unlocked, what is the problem? translation of the firmware perhaps?

Photography is an almost full time hobby of mine. So I know about zoom, lighting, steady hands, aperture, etc. Trust me, do not brush this off as a user related problem simply because you might have a good manufactured run.

The phone's autofocus does not work at all when using zoom. Period. At least for the phones that some of us have. Be it taken from a table or handheld. You can spend the whole day, with surgeon steady hands and noon bright sunshine, and this rubbish happens 99% of the time.

I do not see the need to waste time using Photoshop for every picture I wanted a zoomed in frame simply because the autofocus "feature" on the last 3 P990i phones I checked DOES NOT WORK. So forget about even progressing to the next step of actually taking the picture.

Unless there is a QC problem with some of the phones, SE will need to recall some of these phones.

So you'll also know that digital zooms are a complete waste of time in the first place then.

any person really interested in photography has an art know digital zoom is a "sin"...a complete waste of time...i also am a amateur photographer btw

but you´re right, the phone should focus in all conditions, i can´t deny it...its just that using digital zoom is pointless IMHO

For those who didn't quite undestood what Optical vs. Digital Zoom is, here's a good example:

As you can see, digital zoom is NEVER is focus because it doesn't have more information than the Original picture !!

The only thing it does is to augment a portion of the Original image and blur it to hide the augmented pixels.

This is NOT a discussion between optical-digital zoom .
It is NOT about the quality of digital zoom .

It is about P990i phones whith an almost non working focus and therefore useless zoom . When i zoom and let the phone focus , it's only clear for 0.01sec , then it blurs out . So either there is something wrong with the autofocus , with the firmware , or ... with the hardware .

People without problems thinking this phone is God : well , there are people who do have problems with this 1000$ phone which are not user related . And there are people who do not have access to the latest firmwares etc.
Believe it or not .

Sigh ...

Can't understand why people think this is an optical zoom versus digital zoom debate. It's not. Sorry about my poor English, but I'll try again.

We're on the stage BEFORE picture taking. This is the stage when, like in any $100 camera which has a feature called "autofocus". The user has to half-depress the shot button, which activates the "autofocus" to lock on and produce a crisp image. This is irregardeless of whether the framing of the shot in zoomed or not. Once the picture is to your liking, AFTER that you fully depress the shot button to complete taking the picture.

We are talking about the half-depress stage, where the P990i is NOT able to "autofocus" and produce an acceptable display pic when any type of zoom is applied BEFORE the picture is taken.

I hope this is clear enough for all. When the autofocus doesn't work, forget about even bothering with the second stage of completely pushing down the shot button to take the picture.

In any case, even after going ahead to take the picture, it is completely unusable. You might need the CIA or FBI noise imaging technology to ensure the pictures turns from superblur to acceptable sharp.

If there's a bunch of you out there who are not having any problems, then consider yourself lucky.

Ares & Lau,

If the P990i is so backward in it's "autofocus" technology that it stops functioning when one tries to apply any kind of zoom BEFORE taking a picture, then it shouldn't be a feature in the phone. They should have it removed because it does amount to fraud.

I might have no issues if before taking a picture, ZOOM is disabled. Otherwise, you are cheating your customers with a completely non-working "feature".

If a camera has autofocus, it MUST work under all decent lighting conditions without having to glue it to a table.

I've been a loyal SE customer since the T68i. But if there is cr*p, then there is cr*p because brand loyalty is one thing, but blind loyalty is something all together different.

I love the phone as I've been waiting for it for months. I will hate having to return it back, but will have to if this is not a firmware problem, but a QC problem and batch defect. That's what I'm trying to get at.
