He does not shot with shadow upper him, but he shots with the light source behind. Very common in daylight shots.
Any light emitting directly to the lens is bad, can produce glare or can result of a too dark photo with single bright spot.

but the very best thing is to stand in the shadow and shoot toward a object. (then you "hoax" the light sensor thats its less light then it really is. (and then you get better colors)

Pics are not bad outdoors but indoors there not very good.

shoot this picture with EV.-0,7, just to get this contrast & thick color. so simple trick and so good result.
