About HTC lacking design, it's because for a long time (and I don't know if they still have it), they outsourced there design to a design company (insider info). That's the biggest mistake that ever made, and I don't know if they still do it, but they have for a long time.
I might be Sony minded, but I never ever liked any single device from HTC if it comes to design.

As I said I dont like this big-display approach as it makes all the mobiles not so mobile as i would like to have it (easy pocket fit). For me - the closer to 4inch display the better. I even preffer wider phones (also keyboard-wise) then taller - e.g. Xperia ZL formfactor.
From size point of view i have already mentioned Xperia ZL might be smaller in terms of dimensions - packing 5 inch screen..
