i disagree.
i think it should be more on delivering a distinctive and truly excellent product and spending money on the marketing.
look at the lumia 1020. because it managed to distinguish itself, it is still being talked about. nokia also successfully kept it in the news with the national geographic and other gimmicks.
sony has to come up with a device with no problems and with a killer feature other manufacturers will find difficult to compete with. they already did a great job with the waterproofing in xperia z but they bungled it with the inferior display (that consumed a lot of power).

Just out of curiosity, what do you think that killer feature might be if we exclude the camera ?
I agree with you, its just that its really hard to disrupt the market right now.. its way to saturated. The camera is something very practical, and it still needs a lot of work to truly replace your compact camera fully..
Most smartphones do the same things.. very little differentiation thanks to Google/Apple/Microsoft its all pretty much streamlined. For a hardware manufacturer like Sony to truly shine it needs its own software so that they can make it do exactly what they need it to do... the PlayStation is a perfect example of that, and it works.. granted, the PS4 OS is not great, but its their own to manipulate fully..
Anyway.. for me such a feature would be 100% waterproof including salt water.. maybe some sort of nano coating ? That would be amazing and it would make me buy that phone. Or .. 5-10 days battery life ? Its has to be something big like that for people to notice.. if they keep adding a few new apps and a new interface it won't work. Even their design work won't have that much of an impact on sales. It needs to be something way more innovative that that.

Yes, the 6 will be a huge success.
Its pretty much the perfect storm.. there are A LOT of 4/4s users that didn't upgrade to 5 which will upgrade to 6. Apple's customer retention is amazing overall so they will loose very few customers to android.
A lot of people who jumped to andro/WP because of the bigger screens will probably come back considering that iOS is still superior to the other two OSs .. for the most part. I know that a lot of you will disagree, but from where I am standing iOS is the best OS on the market at the moment.
First time buyers that are looking for a bigger screen won't need to look elsewhere since Apple will have an offering at both 4.7 and 5+ inches.
They are going to make a killing. Releasing a new high end phone anywhere b/w now and the end of the year is set for a very hard fight against the 6. I just don't think that anyone has the tools to go head to head with Apple at this point.. its kind of sad, but true.
Even I am considering it as a replacement for my beloved Nokia 808 if the camera is "good enough" .. I just know that it won't be as good as the PV device so I am not even hoping.

the killer features for me:
- power efficient display (at least similar to xz2 if they don't plan to go OLED)
- better ruggedization since they don't have plans of trimming down bezels anyway. they can add replaceable rubber bumpers, resistance to saltwater
- night vision camera. a thin camera tech for night vision was already developed. it could be a dual camera setup. they can use two cameras (night vision + normal) and combine the images to achieve better details in low light conditions.
- won't hurt adding a flashlight functionality by making the LED flash more powerful and accessible maybe by holding the volume rocker or camera button. they can put up to 10 LEDs if they like
- they can also put in an array of reconfigurable buttons on one side (along with the power button) for quick access to certain apps or functions (at least to justify those huge bezels). these buttons should look good and be integrated with the overall design but may not have any function if the user so prefers. the phone's design will be reversible since they use on-screen navigation buttons anyway so the side reconfigurable buttons can be convenient for both left and right handed users. just put all the branding at the back.
- huge battery. 8.5 - 9.0 mm thickness isn't that uncomfortable to accommodate a huge battery.
- pogo pins that are not just for charging but for also for USB connections via the dock and for directly powering the phone to be able to use it continuously while getting docked.
basically, i'm wishing for a real james bond phone.this device will be easier to promote. it could even become viral on social media. they can highlight the night vision capabilities in one ad, the ruggedness in another (i assume they will go for another flat design so they can show the phone getting run on by a car without getting damaged), and the intuitiveness with the reconfigurable keys (to quickly open apps like the sound recorder, emergency pre-drafted SMS sending, making calls to a specified emergency number without having to dial anything, etc) that can be for both right and left handed users
they can also develop a killer accessory like a dock with a folding or rolling keyboard, power bank, speakers, and USB ports for plugging in more memory, game controllers, or a bigger standard keyboard to transform the smartphone into a workstation (great for bloggers and journalists!) the dock may also be plugged to an AC power source to charge or directly power the

z3 and z3c dimensions:
146.46 x 72.09 x
7.3 mm
126.98 x 64.9 x 8.8 mm
pretty impressive both for z3 and z3c. it makes z3 the slimmest flagship with the most high end internals while height and width also are slightly narrower.

I'm calling it! If those dimensions is accurate on the Z3C it will be the main competitor vs Iphone 6 and the Galaxy Alpha.
I am seriously considering buying a z3c to replace my ZR.

Compact size is the same as current model, which is impressive.
Depending what the Z3c brings to the table, I may grab it as a stopgap for the Z4.
One thing I noticed is the design differences, the z3c has different flap designs than the larger Z3.
