I'm not sure how effective this change in the law will be. I doubt it will stop under 18s from smoking if they want to, just as the old law didn't stop under 16s from smoking. I am all in favour of moves to stop people taking up smoking early; the decision to start smoking should be a conscious choice made with one's own free will and when one has full knowledge of the facts on smoking.

I find it perplexing that 16 and 17 year olds are allowed to smoke, but can't buy tobacco. That sends out a mixed message and will no doubt result in people buying tobacco for under 18s.

The article raises a good point; you can join the army at 16; in Scotland you can order beer and wine in a restaurant at 16, and yet you can't buy a cigar. It's nonsense if you ask me. If a 16 year old is old enough to decide he or she wants to join the army and fight for Queen and Country then I think he or she is old enough to decide whether or not to start smoking.

One last thing; if you want to persuade people not to smoke in the first place then the best thing you can do is to arm them with the facts on smoking. People then have a choice. What I would say though, is that the anti-smoking lobby should be aware that some people do choose to smoke.
