Let me get this right, on the new PC my network places only shows the new PC and not the old one, whilst on the old PC, you can see both PCs but the old one can't connect to the new one?

If that's the case, it stinks of firewalls. Is windows firewall switched off on the new one?

that seems correct. ill try switching off windows firewall. the other one doesnt have a firewall as norton takes up too much ram and windows firewall is greyed out and i cant be bothered to sort it out. what else can i try if that fails?
ok isnt the firewall. still cant get on it

Hi,

I have a problem with a pc, When i start windows xp pro it loads until the username screen. but i dont have a username or password for it so i dont know what to do..... I cannot simply press enter as it says, 'username and password incorrect......' esc dont work either... nothing...
(its not the normal username screen - its more like a box window).

Any idea on how to get on to windows?

by the way its only recently happened and for no apprent reason, ive been using the pc fine for ages..

Cheers all

what did you register the pc under. it must have a main name like "admin" or your name. try typing that in without a password. when logged in yuo should be able to get rid of that log in screen but if its only just coming up then something must be wrong.
@cyco, still cant get it working

@leeboy13

Start the PC up in safe mode and see if you can log in as administrator. if you can, try creating a new user in the usual way (control panel - user accounts).

To get into safe mode, switch the PC on and keep tapping F8 until you get to the windows advanced startup menu. Use the arrow keys to select safe mode and press enter.

@Dude

Is the old PC runing windows 98? If so, it might be to do with the computer names and / or shared folders and devices names. In windows 98, they can only be a certain length and contain certain characters.

Well, if you can't get into safe mode then your pretty much stuffed, I'm afraid. There is a utility I can send to you tomorrow (it's in the office) that gets rid of even windows administrator passwords, but it sounds to me like your windows installation has buggered up.

I'd try a repair reinstall first using the XP install disk, failing that it's looking like a full reinstall, I'm afraid.
