With the original R2A04 i never had problems with autofocus. i just dont know if the update to R3B01 f**c*ed up the phone.

Still waiting for SE to address a lot of issues.

Can't understand why people think this is an optical zoom versus digital zoom debate. It's not. Sorry about my poor English, but I'll try again.

We're on the stage BEFORE picture taking. This is the stage when, like in any $100 camera which has a feature called "autofocus". The user has to half-depress the shot button, which activates the "autofocus" to lock on and produce a crisp image. This is irregardeless of whether the framing of the shot in zoomed or not. Once the picture is to your liking, AFTER that you fully depress the shot button to complete taking the picture.

We are talking about the half-depress stage, where the P990i is NOT able to "autofocus" and produce an acceptable display pic when any type of zoom is applied BEFORE the picture is taken.

I hope this is clear enough for all. When the autofocus doesn't work, forget about even bothering with the second stage of completely pushing down the shot button to take the picture.

In any case, even after going ahead to take the picture, it is completely unusable. You might need the CIA or FBI noise imaging technology to ensure the pictures turns from superblur to acceptable sharp.

If there's a bunch of you out there who are not having any problems, then consider yourself lucky.

Works fine on mine...even with macro turned off i get clear and very sharp pics from my p990i.
Looks like you might have a faulty phone...unlucky fella, get it replaced.

As i said before and ill say it again...sigh...its only a 2mp camera so dont expect super sharp pics from it. Even my k800i which is a 3mp cam is better but still doesnt produce super sharp pics like i get from my 3mp digi cam.

Tried to. But both the phone at my service provider, and at the local SE Service centre, exhibited the same problem which left them a little puzzled too. The only thing in common was that we were all having the newer R5A006 firmware. The SE Service centre upgraded theirs to R7A, but called me up to tell me that the autofocus issue was still there.

Puzzling ...

Thanks for posting the pictures. So the SEUS updates itself automatically...but looks like we will have to wait for another ROM upgrade. I e-mailed Agile Mobile regarding the Messenger conking out after trying to access the menus. Maybe they will release a new version.

I wish they had a Send/Receive button in messaging (akin to the Scan/search) button found in the Wifi menu. There is a line of empty space that could be used for buttons instead of having to tap the menu at the top.

I don't have the fone in front of me, so sorry if the exact wording is a bit off...but you get the idea! Seems they can keep on tweaking the software and menus

Got mine on Voda but told it's a Vanila handset (ish got voda startup and settings in but can edit them)

Phone: R5A006
BT: R4F01
Org: R3A04
CDA:R2A04 (this is repeated twice for some reason?)

SEUS says it's up to date.

Ahhhh....

Check out the August 2006 review of the P990i on GSM Arena (http://www.gsmarena.com/sony_ericsson_p990-review-101p7.php).

"Unfortunately, it seems that the testing unit we've got had some issues since the autofocus just didn't seem to work well over distances longer than several meters. Otherwise the macro shots produce nice and crisp images with great focus."

So is there a batch of 'test units' with defects that have been re-circulated into the market?

Care to respond SE?
