The most telling thing for me about the whole firmware issue is the fact that they ended up buying UIQ in its entirety. I don't see how anyone can doubt their longterm committment to the smartphone market after that.

I can't stand my K800 any longer. I want the P1.

I want to add a few comments to the above posts. All of you havevalid points regarding the P1. Certainly, as far as memory is concerned, it will not be burdened with the same problems as the P990. But remember that the currently underlying software & firmware is the same as the P990. So, although you may be able to run a few more programs at the same time, the serious (intermittent as they may be) bugs such as restarts while answering a call still remain. If they are fixed for the P1 the fw could just have been made available for the P990 and a lot of anger may have been avoided. SE is wrong in its assumption that the memory is the only problem with the P990. IMO, with SE's level of programming and QC, I don't believe that the P1 will be too different than the P990. Yes, perhaps no restarts to improve performance but what about the other bugs?
Lisa@CPS has suggested that most of the bugs in the latest fw for P990 are probably due to SE's incompetent tweaking of additional SE software and not due to Symbian or UIQ3.
Naturally anyone has the choice to buy the P1 but wouldn't it leave a bitter taste if SE abandoned that after 6 months too? Just a thought to ponder over. As for me, if I ever decide to get another SE phone, I will definitely wait for Symbian 9.5 and at least 6 months after launch to see how things go.
Yes, unfortunately to date there is no product on the market that matches the P990 as far as hardware features are concerned - eg. touch screen and flip.

I read in AAS that the p1i is using the latest p990i firmware. So who knows how long support P1i have before being abandoned. I suspect P1i is an interim solution before new phones based on new UIQ3 version is released.

I agree with makbil that more RAM may not solve all the problems. If they dont stop the memory leaks, no matter how much additional RAM will not help. It just delay the inevitable.

It would be very interesting to see and hear from actual users experiance.
Since my P990 never restarts while answering a call and dont have so called serious bugs at all, IMO P1 would behave extremely well with its 400% more ram. Regarding that I agree with boinng. But lets see.

We have a P1. Apparently it does not have the memory leak problem. After using several programs and then doing maintenance with SMP, it nicely regains the same amount of free memory that it has after restart, that is around 80 MB. This is definitely not a guarantee (the phone is not under heavy use), but a good sign.

The P1 is NOT using "the latest P990 firmware" - after all, a good chunk of that firmware deals with flip closed operation, which is irrelevant to the P1. All the reports so far suggest it's using a new build based on the (currently very stable) M600 firmware branch, and that there have been improvements to the memory management as well as the extra memory hardware.

Of course it's worth waiting to hear more real-world reports when the phone is released - I certainly won't be queuing up for mine immediately - but I would be very surprised if this ends up a repeat of the P990 debacle. Belatedly, and sadly for the P990 owners, I think the P1 is going to the polished, well rounded smartphone that we all wish SE could have delivered a year ago.

Lisa,

Please could you test whether the H264 codec works within the video application on your P1i? Try playing this clip:

http://m-uk.podshow.com/media[....]es/67582/geekbrief-67582-06-26 -2007.mp4

Does the clip play, or give an error?

Thanks,
Malcolm
