The placement of the antenna at the bottom is a FCC requirement. However when they test phones, they do so against a human head (radiation) or body, not against a 'hand' (http://www.antennasys.com/antennasys-blog/2010/6/24/apple-iphone-4-antennas.html). The design flaw might have really gone unnoticed.
Daringfireball.com is saying the antenna issue depends on signal strength but I don't think that helps very much. It just indicates that a place with very good reception can prevent the issue from happening but what about all the other places?
I'm quite disappointed. I was really really excited about this phone. Is anyone holding out on buying an iphone 4 because of this?

ok, I just confirmed my tomtom car kit works with the iphone 4 with the addition of a piece of cardboard to make up for the reduced thickness of the new phone! lol!

im not liking how many bugs it has at the moment then just seeing how
awful quality the camera is aswell has put me off slightley more.

You would think they would test the antenna in the real world not in factories

They do test it in the real world but it seems they use cases to prevent the phones from being seen (like the gizmodo one). There's really a chance they've missed this flaw.. very sad ::(:

I was reading about this new voice commands too! Cool! However, I still don't know what saying 'wrong' does to the phone lol.
About the antenna issue, apparently apple is coming up with an OS update to adress the issue. Perhaps as early as monday. Let's cross our fingers!lol

In general, the iPhone 4 reception is definetly better than the 3GS as I get a strong consistant signal on the 21st floor of my office building compared with the 3gs. I had both there yesterday for comparison.
I'm still puzzled how a software update can do anything for this, but we'll see...
