VAIO is a category where Sony can still be very individual, they haven't had as many crazy niche devices recently (although the Tap 20 and the Duo 11 were big steps back towards this) but it would be a bit of a shame if Sony bowed out of it.

I think part of the contraction for the VAIO business this year is Windows 8, so hopefully the combaintion of that and some new devices will lead to some interesting results for Q3.

I'm typing this from my VAIO SB Series (which is my 2nd VAIO) so I guess you could say I'm a bit of a fan. Looking quite heavily at the Duo 11 but the mixture of high price and bad timing (my uni session just ended so don't really need it) is delaying my decision.

Hm..CPS made 10bil in 2010 and loss 230bil ¥ in 2011.
I wonder how much VAIO contributed to both.

I brought it up cause obviously since years ago the PC business pretty much died as a money maker...Dell...HP...all bruised and hammered... getting out of PC bus. quick.

Honestly, I haven't seen anyone with a VAIO on campus in my recent university years. I even sold computers years ago and man were the VAIOs hard to sell for all the wrong reasons.

Whatever - Xperia is our new hope !

wow...Sony with 8.8 vs 7.x for RIM, HTshit et al.

How the heck did Sony manage that number without any "huge" carrier deals ???
Any sales data on specific xperia models?

8.8 is hot new figure today.
IDC could not have factored that in.

@Platia1 Wait Bro... Wait... It's for good... I hope they wouldn't have got numbers from Sony... If they had released that info abt Sony that day itself, we would've been 1 in 10... Now it's show time... Now every mobile website will come up with news & put Sony officially no.3 b4 RIM... Every1 will know how fast Sony's goin up...We might not have achieved something bigger like Sammy or "suing fruit"... But it's jus the beginning...

It's not that IDC got it wrong, seems like Sony didn't give out any data to IDC as those are all official figures from the vendors and not IDC's estimates.
Also someone please tip Xperia Blog about this news so other major sites like PhoneArena, GSMArena can post news about Sony becoming No.3 smartphone vendor

It's kind of sad that limited news sites reported Sony Mobile's growth. Moreover, those who reported it failed to compare the 8.8 million figure with other companies. :'(

Edit: I actually tipped PA, but they left out the top 3 part. Somebody, go spread the top 3 news lol.

Can anyone tell me where it says 8.8 million units, I can't find it in the financial report myself.

EDIT: Ahh my bad, I was looking at the ugly PDF rather than the funky file on the front page.
