Just tried the update service again tonight with interesting results.
This time, the application didn't alert me that the latest firmware was the same as that on my phone, and it downloaded a new copy and proceeded to update the phone - or so I thought.
Unfortunately, it reflashed R2L001, but I noticed something in the log:
19.04.10:093 8 Info ScriptVersion = R2AA003 R2AA003 prgCXC125821_EU_1_C (by) homeflash.jd
19.04.10:093 9 Info DeviceVersion = R2L001 R2L001 prgCXC125821_EU_1_C (by) homeflash.jd
It seems as though R2AA003 might be available, but R2L001 is still being delivered. Why, though, did it not tell me that I'd be flashing with the same firmware?

It just means that they are using the script from R2AA003 but the actual firmware is R2L. Obviously there is some minor change to this firmware (which I have) but I think too minor for us to notice.
R2AA will only be available when SE have fixed the bugs. Doesn't this remind you of the R2E firmware!!!!!!!

Camera doesn't work anymore after update. If I go into camera-mode, it jumps straight out. Any solutions?

take it to a service centre i'd suggest
or the only other way to repair blinking phones is to use Multiserver,
