The P1 is NOT using "the latest P990 firmware" - after all, a good chunk of that firmware deals with flip closed operation, which is irrelevant to the P1. All the reports so far suggest it's using a new build based on the (currently very stable) M600 firmware branch, and that there have been improvements to the memory management as well as the extra memory hardware.

LOL...so, it canīt be based on the P990 firmware, because of the flip, but i can be based on the M600 firmware, that has NO camera and NO wifi???

the P1 actual firmware IS based on the latest P990 firmware.

I seem to remember that a major reason for the long delay in bringing out the P990 was because of problems SE were having in getting the flip closed operations working properly.

Without it, their developers probably found it much easier to sort out all the problems.

Does the clip play, or give an error?
Unfortunately it gives an error and can not play it.

Ares, I'd be interested to hear whether you have a source for that. All the supposed "insider" knowledge I've seen here says it's updated M600 firmware, which makes sense since the interface itself would have to follow the M600 format rather than the P990 - no flip closed, soft buttons at the bottom rather than top, dual mode keypad etc. Not that it really matters since obviously all of these UIQ3 builds are very closely related, and all of the above and functions such as wifi and camera support are bound to be modular in nature anyway.

Crucially, the "in the field" reports of users with the P1 (such as Lisa above) confirm that the memory management is improved. That single change makes a nonsense of the idea that this is just "P990 firmware" in a new shell.

Boinng,

http://www.allaboutsymbian.co[....]m/CommunicAsia_2007_Report.php

You believe what you want...its obvious the P1 firmare can only be based on the P990īs, and not the M600 or W950. Camera and wifi justify that.

The relationships between projects of this magnitude can be confusing for the developers themselves...

I'm sorry, but anyone can see that the version number he was seeing on the P1 was nonsense. If it's running the exact same software as the P990, how is the screen layout completely different? How come half the icons we can see in the main menu are different? Why would a P1 be loaded with firmware that included support for a redundant flip closed mode? Why would the P990 be updated to support a 3.2mp camera? None of that makes any sense. The fact that SE engineers haven't come up with a new numbering scheme for P1 firmware yet? That's a lot more believable...

No, they don't. Support for the camera and wifi are bound to be modular additions to the core, not tied in inextricably. They're sets of applications and drivers that could be added to any UIQ3 build as necessary.

Do you imagine that when SE created the W950 they built the software entirely from scratch? Or did they take the firmware from the M600, add the FM radio app from the P990, and create a new Walkman app to stick on top? Or maybe, since only the P990 supported the FM radio at the time, they took the whole of the P990 firmware and just hid the wifi and camera?
