you are right 220x176 was midtier,but SE implemented it in the W-flagships - W800i,W810i.After all,the music phone's focus is not on imaging and better battery life was the point for this.Then they made the W900i which had 320x240 display,but if the xml file was from before that period but still the same year,its reasonable why they wrote 220x176.Don't forget that W900i was an elaboration of the SE Japan,not the Europe division so this could be one more explanation.With the W900,high end Walkmans became not only music,but multimedia devices(W900 has a graphic accelerator).When W900 became bestseller,SE possibly decided to leave the W999i project for a later period as it was selling well and didn't need quick upgrade.And if W999i was a project of SE Europe(and possibly worse than W900i spec-wise because it would have 220x176pix display,which is not very good for such a multimedia device,but only focused on music) they would have to make a totally new project which wouldn't have anything in common with that xml file.
Though there is another possibility:SE Europe started developing the W999i and saw it will become too bulky or not too high end or whatever and they decided to leave this project for the Japanese division as they would make it better.So SE Japan took it and developed it but then any of the divisions decided to change the name to W900 in order to leave some space over the 900 for newer Walkmans and not to make mess with the next flagship Walkman which would have to have a lower number.

According to the latest rumors Sofia will be delayed for undetermined time:(

I'm not betting on any one particular announcement date.
are too unpredictable at the moment to put your money on any date.
I'm just hoping the next announcement features some higher end phones.
